PeregrineFalcon 0 #1 December 2, 2008 I felt like writing something positive for a change, so here goes. There's this paternal figure at the dz who's always looking out for everybody. Two days ago, everyone was grounded due to engine trouble. He and I were talking about what I need to do for my A license. At some point, I also mention my job as a teacher. He then told me about this friend of his who died and left him with a bunch of money for him to distribute to various educational endeavors. He said that since skydiving is definitely educational, he's allocated some of that money to skydiving. He then gave me four jump tickets!!! Just like that. Then yesterday, the dz got a new plane and I was about to do a solo jump. He came out to the plane and says, "You're with me." Up in the air, he told me what to do on my check dive. I have to say, I was pretty awesome. As I tracked away, I saw him in my peripheral vision and then he crossed at a 45 degree angle about five feet below me, waving as he did. On the ground, he didn't want any money for the check dive! I offered him a beer, but he doesn't drink! He then gave me the quiz for the A license. All I have left is a 3.5k hop 'n' pop. There's nice and then there's REALLY nice.
NWFlyer 2 #2 December 2, 2008 Whew! I was afraid this was going to be yet another "how come nice guys can't get a date?" threads. Sounds like you have some good mentors at your DZ (I suspect I might know who you're talking about, actually). And if you continue to show yourself willing to listen, I bet you'll find more as you stay in this sport. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke

I think he had more satisfaction seeing me do well than I did in doing it.50 donations so far. Give it a try. Andy9o8 2 #12 December 2, 2008 The best coaches are the up-jumpers who consider jumping with newbies just to pay it forward and see the smile on their face when something "clicks" to be the best kind of fun-jump.

bluerosie 0 #16 December 2, 2008 I think finding a mentor is key in succeeding at becoming an acomplished jumper. Sure helps with the intimidation factor. Glad you found someone to take you under their wing with no other expectations than to pass on the love of the sport.
