Nightingale 0 #18 December 3, 2008 QuoteDon't they have a responsibility to look after the sprog if something happens to the parents or something? It's really whatever you agree with the parents that your duties will be. In many cases, the parents pick whoever they feel will best look after the child should something happen to the parents, and take steps to make that happen legally, and in other cases, it's the responsibility of the godparent to look after the child's spiritual upbringing should anything happen to the parents, while someone else would have the job of actually raising the child. I have two godkids (a brother and sister, children of one of my closest friends), and, according to their parents, it's my job to: 1. spoil them rotten on their birthdays and at christmas 2. Make sure they are raised Catholic if anything happens to their parents, since the people who will be getting custody of the children are not Catholic (neither am I, but I was raised in the church and have agreed to respect the parents wishes). I am the one who is to make sure they get to church on sundays and go through the appropriate sacraments, until they are confirmed, and after that point, their religion is their business because they are considered adults in the church. Their role is to take over the parental duties if something to happen to the wife and I, unless my mother is still around - then she'll probably raise him. Butthead: Whoa! Burritos for breakfast! shropshire 0 #20 December 3, 2008 Well, it must be different in the States because over here you only get to light a candle, spout some stuff in Church and get a piece of paper from the Vicar - No legal stuff at all... That guardian stuff can only to be done by lawers - that doesn't make you a Godparent. (.)Y(.) guppie01 0 #21 December 3, 2008 QuoteWell, it must be different in the States Nah, I think the role sort of morphed or is misunderstood by many. The origins of god-parents are to be a spiritual mentor / guide for the child. They are to be part of the baptism, confirmation, and spiritual teachings of the child (unless the family is Jewish, then the role is a bit different). As far as the legal aspect, the god-parent has no legal right to the child unless the biological parents have a will that states the god-parent will become the foster parent in the case of an untimely death of both biological parents. g"Let's do something romantic this Saturday... how bout we bust out the restraints?"
