selbbub78 0 #1 December 17, 2008 I'm looking at a portable GPS Car Unit to buy as a christmas gift, and I'm trying to decide what kind to get. What do you have? What do you Recommend? Bolas 5 #2 December 17, 2008 Garmin. I have a 3 year old Garmin that works great. It doesn't have the newer maps but it hasn't been a problem for me yet. Some units come with a live maps feature but I believe those require a subscription. I'm not sure I'd bother with a subscription as the way mobile phone technology seems posed to make separate GPS units no longer necessary in a few years or so.Stupidity if left untreated is self-correcting If ya can't be good, look good, if that fails, make 'em laugh. airdvr 210 #4 December 17, 2008 I had a Magellan Maestro I really like until it was stolen. Now I have a Tom Tom...no comparison to the Magellan. Magellan popped up a screen when you got to your destination which showed the address...Tom Tom doesn't do this. When you turn on the street you have to stop and see what the number is. Just one example. Please don't dent the planet. Destinations by Roxanne
Morrison79 0 #5 December 17, 2008 Get a garmin. If you have a Sams Club membership they have some really good deals on the units. A guy from my work just got one that retails for $800 and picked it up for $350. Decide what you are looking for before you purchase. Some of them will just give basic directions, meaning turn right or left, while others will say the name of the street/highway that you are supposed to turn on. A lot of the other features are pretty much useless like the MP3 player or picture viewer.

FlyingJ 0 #7 December 17, 2008 I have a Garmin 360 that I just got off ebay recently for relatively cheap. New in the box, cost me about $140. It's the lowest level model that includes bluetooth so you can use it as a handsfree phone connection. I'm pretty happy so far, though I don't really do much navigating, mainly just watch the map when I need to. The bluetooth feature is nice.Killing threads since 2004. skydude2000 3 #8 December 17, 2008 I've got a Nuvi 330c, I think. It's really good, except if you make a lot of turns in a short period, it tends to get confused for a minute.PULL!! or DIE!!
RALFFERS 0 #9 December 17, 2008 This is a great site to get unbiased information of what's available in the world of portable GPS units. www.gpsmagazine.com The way the guy writes the reviews (VERY detailed) you feel as though you own the unit just by reading the article(s) He really does provide a wealth of information! I have used Garmin & Magellan, & recommend them both. Both have a great routing engine, but are different in subtle ways; it realy depends on what you're looking for. Garmin's routing engine is slightly better than that of Magellan (gets you to your destination between 5-10 minutes faster), but Magellan has a better map screen (more useful information.) Furthermore, Magellan's are LOADED with features, but are more competitively priced than the competition.Dialogue/commentary between Divot, Twardo & myself - "from your first Oshkosh when the three of us were riding to or from one of
freefallfreak 0 #10 December 17, 2008 I've owned a Garmin 2620 for about 5 years and love it. I update it about every two years and wouldn't have any other brand. I recently bought a 2009 Dodge SRT8 Super Bee with a built in NES system and it just doesn't compare with the Garmin. wolfriverjoe 1,523 #11 December 17, 2008 I have a Garmin 60CSx handheld. I use it on the motorcycle, in the car, the semi, and even on foot. The screen is a little small, but the versatility is amazing. I had to get the map CD-ROM to get all the streets and addresses, but it takes me anywhere in the US and southern Canada. There are better ones for "car only", but I love being able to take mine just about anywhere."There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." BillyVance 35 #12 December 17, 2008 I just got the Mio MOOV 500 model as an early Christmas gift. It's the first GPS model I've ever had so I have no reference to compare it to the others. I was told it was about $100 and on sale. SuFantasma 0 #13 December 17, 2008 I've had the Garmin Nuvi 660 for over 2 years (I had a Garmin StreetPilot prior to this that). Here is what I found useful: 1) Touch screen 4.3" screen is just the right size, not too small, not too big 2) Ability to enter points of interest ( I downloaded all the speed and red light cams into the unit) 3) Bluetooth connection to your cell phone - I can lookup a business by name and the phone number will also show up, just hit dial and you are connected, very useful 4)Quick route calculationY yo, pa' vivir con miedo, prefiero morir sonriendo, con el recuerdo vivo". - Ruben Blades, "Adan Garcia"

futuredivot 0 #15 December 17, 2008 After my Tom Tom crapped out I went with Garmin Nuvi-It seems to have better maps but I miss Tom Tom's British slut that used to give me directions. You are only as strong as the prey you devour
lawrocket 3 #16 December 17, 2008 I've got a Magellan - I can't remember the model. It's so dang easy to use. I love it. My wife's car has a built-in Garmin that I find far less user friendly. My wife is hotter than your wife.
Gawain 0 #17 December 17, 2008 We have a TomTom and there are a few frustrations I have with it, but it's offset in my view by the form factor, and I especially like how information is displayed. So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! micduran 0 #19 December 17, 2008 I have a Magellan Maestro and love it. I chose it over the Garmin units because the map also shows side streets. I just wish it had a pause button. BIGUN 1,471 #22 December 17, 2008 I pcked up this Garmin Nuvi at Best Buy for $179.00 (not during the Xmas season). Lightweight. Great sized screen. Carrying case to take it all over the country with me. No frills like bluetooth - had that in a previous version and wound up never using it due to the other party's complaints of inability to hear me cause it sounded like I was in a tunnel. So now it's just a plain 'ol GPS unit and use the Jawbone for talking while driving. https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=134&pID=9122Nobody has time to listen; because they're desperately chasing the need of being heard.
