The Sharp End

Recommended Posts

No, I missed the premier when it showed in Boulder. . . I cought King Lines and First Ascent though they were pretty good. Mostly Sharma bouldering and taking HUMANGUS whippers off sport routes.

Did you see The Sharp End?? Any good?

Here's what I told Bolas on MySpace:

"I told a friend's 5 year old daughter to "get used to it" when she unexpectedly received some liquid to the face when she was cracking open bottles of beer for us at the DZ tiki bar. Yeah, a little inappropriate but it was funny as hell.

I've seen it. Speaking from a climber's perspective, the angle, e.g., exploring what the "sharp end," means to various disciplines, felt contrived. However, the cinematography was hands down the best I've ever seen. And I've seen a lot. Peter Mortimer is a film maker at the absolute top of his game -- and the entire industry. The footage of Dean Potter BASE-soloing (climbing unroped with only a BASE rig to protect him if he falls) is nothing short of stunning, both visually and conceptually.

For those not up on the lingo, "the sharp end" is the end of the rope you're tied into when lead climbing.

Did it feel contrived? A little ... It might have felt more contrived but as a climber I've always thought of "the sharp end" as being the place where your mind and body have to be sharp (focused only on the task at hand) which does carries over into the other the disciplines.

Agreed. I've watched it multiple times and also enjoyed the making of it in the extras ...
