selling used gear, buying new, what to do with old AAD?

Recommended Posts

I have a rig with AAD (Cypres 2, about 2 years old)

I will be ordering a new rig, which I will also equip with AAD (Cypres 2 again).

Once I can jump my new rig I will sell the old one.

Should I:

a) Sell old rig with AAD, buy new AAD for new rig
b) Sell old rig without AAD, install old AAD in new rig

I'm leaning toward (b), since you always lose money when you sell things used, there is no reason to sell the AAD and buy a new one if I don't have to. The only benefit of (a) would be getting a new AAD that is further from the 4-year service mark, but I don't think that's worth it. I guess it depends on how much money I'd really lose (i.e. the resale value of a 2-yr old Cypres 2) to decide.

Another consideration is will the AAD work with the new rig? I don't know much about rigging but I know there are different models of AAD's for different rigs (1-pin, 2-pin, etc). The old rig is a Vector 3 V348M, the new one is an Icon I4. I'm guessing the AAD would swap ok...

It will swap just fine. Only major rigs that needs a 2 pin is a Racer or Strong tandem rig.

As for your options... B. The used AAD market is swamped over the winter months and buyers dry up compared towards summer. Why sell something for a large loss of $? ;)

The cypress may be an exception to that. With the cypres calculators out there, the depreciation is pretty linear, and last fall when I was looking, the asking prices on 8yo C1s was well over true value. I ended up with a new in box C2 from a guy that got hurt before he installed it.

The gear sellers can tell you - old rig may be easier to sell with the cypres installed.

That was another concern I had. I want my old rig to be marketable. It's in great condition, Spectre 170, PDR 160, Vector 3, great for beginners. Beginners like AAD though. I may lose a bit of money on the used AAD sale, but I may gain it back if I make the whole rig very attractive to new buyers. Any thoughts on this issue, anyone?

You are split on that one. I watch the classifieds a lot (being an editor gives me that perk) and most times if you are selling a 170 its either going to a small new jumper or a second rig for a large jumper. The beginner might like the cypres but since you are already talking top dollar rig parts you might just price the container out of their price range. A second rig is a toss up if they want it or not.

I think your rig would be more attractive to novices in the market for used without the AAD (exempting those buyers who would insist on it being shipped to them packed and ready to jump). It's fairly easy to pick up a used (original) Cypres with 4 years or less left on it; doing that will save the buyer several hundred dollars.

You might try offering it for sale either way, making it clear how much it will cost. With a new/used AAD being so easy to buy quickly, it won't matter to you either.
People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am

Yep - the original teapdrop was a two pin, they then brought out the 1 pin teardrop (now referred to as the Teardrop Classic) and later the Teardrop Superfly.

Only the old two-pin version (you can tell these as they have a flat pop top - the one pin versions have a domed pop top) will require a two-pin cypres.
