mnealtx 0 #26 December 23, 2008 Quote I think he ment a Marlin guide gun in 45-70 with garrett hammerhead loads. 30-30 in 45-70 is like saying a .38 in 44 magnum.Garrett loads in my .44 redhawk? I can only shoot two a session of the 'big' ones. Compared to 500 rds of 9 mm a session. Yeah, I did... fingers faster than my brain.Mike I love you, Shannon and Jim. BillyVance 35 #29 December 23, 2008 Wow, I am shocked that this thread morphed into a guns discussion and is still here in the Bonfire. What's the matter with you guys? Amazon 7 #32 December 23, 2008 I'm still not buying it. The US Government put the .45-70 on the trash heap of history for good reasons. Its an outdated cartridge. While it may have been adequte( questionable in the Trapdoor Springfield) for the Indian War, it was an ill advised weapon for use against the more modern Mausers the Spanish were using in that war and its not something I would select for something the size and power of a big white bear. Large calibers may be a good round for heavy brush for deer or elk.... but my experience with white bears is fairly open ice and tundra.. with the closest brush... hundreds of miles away. Some people may like the old lever action rifles because they look all cowboy frontierish... but are certainly not the weapon I would want to rely on in the arctic winter to not end up as a tasty alternative to a steady seal diet. By the way, if you ever go to Svalbard and rent a gun to go out of town (it's compulsory because of the polar bears around), you'll most probably be given a Mauser =) Byt boy is that sucker heavy...
