ACMESkydiver 0 #1 December 24, 2008 Little Jaleesa is getting a guitar for Christmas. She wanted an electric, but we told her she had to learn acoustic first. -And just to make sure she was SERIOUS, I told her she had to learn something on her little baby guitar, first. Then we might buy her one next year. So she printed out sheet music from a website online and learned the strings and is playing Christmas music. Ok, so she gets the real one... We didn't tell her that, but that's what auntie bought her. So there are tons of different methods and instruction books and DVD's out there. What would anybody here recommend? Jaleesa is 12, plays the cello, taught herself how to play flute, and now knows the basic strings for guitar, but only a few notes, and none of the chords or anything about style, etc... Thank you for any ideas! ~Jaye Do not believe that possibly you can escape the reward of your action.
AggieDave 6 #2 December 24, 2008 There are a decent number of good books and DVDs available. Just please please please stay the hell away from Estaphen and his crap.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."
Gato 0 #3 December 24, 2008 My very favorite guitar instructional book is called, "Theory for the Contemporary Guitarist." That should probably be the second book she gets, but honestly, the beginner book & CD/DVD combinations from Mel Bay are a good place to start. Maybe one of these would be good. I've heard good things about eMedia: http://www.amazon.com/eMedia-Guitar-Basics-Version-2/dp/B0001GDKLE/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&s=musical-instruments&qid=1230091317&sr=1-11 or http://www.amazon.com/emedia-EG08063-Guitar-Method-Version/dp/B000VS8VXE/ref=sr_1_22?ie=UTF8&s=musical-instruments&qid=1230091474&sr=1-22T.I.N.S. Thank you for any ideas! Great thread topic! I bought Kevin(8yrs old) an electric guitar for xmas. He wanted guitar hero but I think he will be happy with this gift since he said he only wanted it for the guitar. She will learn SO much faster with a live teacher, even if it's just a few lessons to get her started on the right path.1st jump August 6, 1977. Last jump July 8, 2006. ACMESkydiver 0 #9 December 24, 2008 Quote Enough can't be said for human lessons. I totally agree with you... However, I'm paying for 10 people's living expenses right now, have been for 10 months, probably will be for at least another 5. I couldn't even afford the damn cheap guitar. That's why my sister bought it. All I can get her is a book and DVD. When it's feasible, you bet I'll get her some private lessons! ~Jaye Do not believe that possibly you can escape the reward of your action.
