So this is a skydiving website right?

So why in the fuck can I not ask a skydiving related question anywhere in these forums without pompas ass people jumping down my throat, judging me (or attempting too)... FUCK! I have struggled so hard to stay in this sport that I love so much. Im sure my questions seem stupid to most, but fuck me for putting my kids and their lives and needs first and not being able to spend every waking moment at a dz. I want to learn, I want to stay connected at to this sport, but I have priorities, and unfortunately skydiving isnt at the top of my list right now (as much as I want it to be). Ok rant over... flame away....

Many people ask the wrong question because they don't know any better.

Some people are nice enough to answer the question they should be asking.

That's a good thing since the consequences of being wrong can be death and more or worse.

BTW: A Cypres costs ess than $2 a month to maintain. I don't know if that's what you're getting upset about; but if you post generalities you get generalities and speculation back.

Frieds dying is my least favorite thing about parachuting sports, followed by getting broken and then people I don't know getting killed and broken. I'd guess that other people feel about the same and that a lot of the responses you get are motiviated by that.

You're my hero Scoop, use the search function and im sure somewhere down the line i said you can lick my balls. :)

Seriously though, well said. I especially like it when it links to a thread years and years old and we are supposed to believe peoples opinions are going to be the exact same.

I either answer or not. I've never told anyone to "do a search." Skydiving (and most other things) are dynamic and answers change. And when people don't ask a question because they dread the "do a search" it stifles new points of view.

Sure, some questions and comments are very redundant, "Check out this guy Lutz," or, "How do I pencil pack correctly," or, "Help, my landings suck!" But searches only get you background. And I don't know about the rest of you but every time I tell a story it gets better. For instance on the "Lutz" thing I don't mind re-telling the story because I was on that load with another student. And what I may have written about it last year, or the year before, and the year before that may have softened, or hardened, depending on new experiences in my life.

I think the phrase "do a search" should actually be banned. Either answer or ignore the question. I stopped answering the most basic student type questions figuring a new generation of instructors will step up. And a student is a student and an instructor is an instructor no matter if we are talking over a packing mat or over the internet. If redundant questions bother you, LOL, don't ever go for your Instructor rating!

Or how about Shana Richardson? That one just popped up again in the bonfire. We all bagged on her pretty good the first time around and that's the impression a "search" will give someone who's never heard of her. But now some are now saying, "Hey, wait a minute, she's just a student for Christ sakes!"

And guess what? That point of view is valid. She is just a student and her behavior in the air, and in the aftermath, belies that. Plus every time it pops up someone new, someone we've never heard from before who was there, or who sat the FJC with her, or actually knows her, may chime in and we get new insights. That won't happen if the OP fears asking about it in the first place . . .

There are no wrong answers QUESTIONS!! in life, much less skydiving.
People will never learn the right things unless they ask questions.
Getting upset or at worst, insulting people because one feels they ask the wrong questions is IMO, the wrong approach.
Help them to the right questions and answers.

No wonder people leave this sport.
We have too many people thinking they are Skygods.
It makes them unapproachable assholes.
;)

To Misty - although I don't know what you originally asked I would recommend you find a personable instructor and talk to them face to face. Preferably someone who knows your jump experience.:S

I agree with everything you and Nick said - except for the "there are no wrong answers" part. :P

And mamajumps, I feel your pain. Try not to let the anonymous assholes get you down. At least you can turn off your computer and they shut up. Unfortunately, there are those that know them in person that don't have that luxery.;)

I was a participant in the discussion on the original thread. If you will look back at your posts, they had two parts.

Part I was a question about saves and misfires from Vigil and Argus. You got a specific albeit incomlete answer from me.

Part II was commentary.... sold Cypress.. too expensive ... single mom of three kids. Your commentary is what stirred folks up.

Here are the issues that you got entangled in:

--I am one of the "Do a Search" Nazis. The searches for the links I supplied you took less than 90 seconds. I am happy to help folks who are willing to help themselves. [Note I searched Google to get answers from the manufacturers rather than the mix of stuff we can find on these forums.)

--If you had simply asked a question....I bet that you would have gotten better answers. As sson as you engaged in commentary you opened the door for all sorts of replies about your commentary, rather than your question.

If you had posted the following I bet that you would gotten on-target answers from helpful people.

"I am looking for information about the saves/misfires that have occured with Argus and Vigil AADs. I have tried searching to no avail."

If you don't like the noise... don't bait the noisemakers.
The choices we make have consequences, for us & for others!

I forget the question...

Mamajumps, Your avatar and my poor eyesight made for some confusion on my part. I thought you were kinda butch, large and had a shadow of a beard until I pulled on my glasses. Oops. Sorry...

I remember the skygod mentality and have to admit being somewhat, OK really badly, guilty of it myself. There used to be this blue mat spread out at the DZ that was only for the elite. I made the cut and my head was so swelled up with what a cool and groovy guy I had become that anybody but me could tell. I think it happens here too don't you?!

I'm sure you have made more than a few friends here and will find that a reality check PM can be better than an open question to the masses. Keep at it and get out when you can. There is nothing as heartwarming as hearing "Where have you been? We've missed you!" when you get back to the DZ.

good luck,
jon

And friends. ;)

Why some people feel a need to put people down is beyond me. I'm on here for fun and to learn. And to share my limited knowledge. And share my opinions.
