gearless_chris 1 #26 December 30, 2008 By the way, that *might* is there because some "experienced" jumpers who regard parachutes merely as something to get down to earth alive and who barely know how to flare should probably stay on Manta's - even though they "meet the requirements" for a stiletto. You must be referring to the people that just blindly spiral down as quickly as possible to get on the next load."If it wasn't easy stupid people couldn't do it", Duane. kallend 2,146 #36 December 30, 2008 QuoteThis reply is not referring to you. When members put information in their profile, it ought to be the truth. When people claim D-numbers that don't exist yet, or make outrageous claims for jump numbers compared to their time in the sport, or have other inconsistencies, it makes them look like liars. And people who lie about their jump experience can't be trusted to give good advice. It's a sign of a psyche that is being deceptive towards others, and when it comes to safety, this is unacceptable. If you don't have much experience, that's fine. But people need to know that background to help judge what you say, and how to respond. It doesn't mean that low experience will always mean bad advice, but it's one factor in determining the perspective or legitimacy of that advice. Likewise, high experience does not always mean good advice. However, a betting man will accept high experience advice any day over low experience advice. Coincidentally, just a few days ago, I called someone out about inconsistencies and inaccurate info in their profile. My post was deleted, I suppose because it was considered "rude". So that person is still out there, dispensing advice, while claiming vast jump experience that he doesn't actually have... What this tells me is that this forum values politeness as more important than safety. "Honesty is the best policy." +1 I'll add that having a correctly filled out profile is simple common courtesy. Misrepresenting yourself to the community is just plain rude.... The only sure way to survive a canopy collision is not to have one.

Misrepresenting yourself to the community is just plain rude. And let me add one more thing... While this is an internet forum, for a lot of us, its an extension of real life and real relationships. Unlike a lot of online communities, there is alot of RL interaction between some people on here. Lying or misrepresenting yourself just becomes plain dumb in a situation like this.Remster

virgin-burner 1 #41 December 30, 2008 Quote Quote oh, but the "community" presenting itself to be rude arse holes, that's ok!? Maybe those people are assholes in "real" life too. so far i have only met tony and another guy from here, second which posts close to nothing, and had nothing to say when we met, didnt even share a beer with him. tony was a scream tough and we had a good time. i dont think that's representing a good cut from the "population" around here. but if the rude arse holes, and there are many around, are about the same in RL, i dont have no real desire to meet them. on the other hand, there are people i'd really like to meet. after all its a skydiving website, and so far i found skydivers to be likeable guys and girls to hang out with. but that alone does not justify to be a rude arse hole online. there are some that are, and if you get to know them a little closer, they turn out to be real helpful and nice. so, since well-known moderators and others have been known to tweak their numbers, or have worked in a tunnel once, or act like skydivers but are just spoilt brats, or have maybe jumped 2000 times but with rounds and havent seen near a dz in the last twenty years, those jumpnumbers and profiles mean pretty much nothing in regards to what is asked. how about the guy i was when i started 2(0) years ago. i was merely interested in the people and the equipment and the safety. nil jumpnumbers, no homedropzone, but eager to learn about some of the aspects. if i wasnt determined to do it anyway, based on some of the answers back then, i just would of said fuck it, i rather spent my money on whores and booze.. not that i dont now, but you get my drift! “Some may never live, but the crazy never die.” -Hunter S. JohnRich 4 #47 December 30, 2008 Quote I'm glad I could make your day John, happy to do it . Since you didn't think boob (8008) was funny I put it back to 420, I shouldn't have to explain that number. I'm glad you pointed out my typo in my D number, that was an accident. I tried giving you my real jump numbers but you blocked my PM's . You're not supposed to make personal attacks on here, especially in the incidents forum, they take that area pretty serious. I think it's funny that some of these people take life so seriously, that someones profile info can make them so mad. Maybe people should take up some more hobbies. I didn't mention you by name. And pointing out incorrect information is not a "personal attack". As they say in the law; the truth is a valid defense to an accusation of slander. I'm glad that you've changed your profile to 420 jumps, instead of 8,008 jumps, and updated your D-number. Thanks for coming clean. That's a vast difference in jump numbers, and completely changes they way people will take your advice. In a dangerous sport like this, it's very important not to misrepresent yourself when dispensing advice. Someone thinking you have 8,000 jumps will assume that you know just about everything there is to know about skydiving, and may take some questionable advice to heart and get hurt. However, that same person knowing you have 420 jumps might take your advice with a grain of salt, or seek other opinions first, before deciding whether or not to adopt that advice. Honesty is important here. If you wish to have fun, that's great, but don't do it by giving advice while misrepresenting your jump experience.
