Tuna-Salad 0 #1 December 30, 2008 Why do people constantly bitch about updating a profile? Seems that what you have in your profile is more important than the question being asked. It's a profile for a damn website. Seriously people, get a grip. Just because someone does not have a profile filled out does not mean what they ask is not legit. Get over it already. The same goes for jump numbers. It's a bullshit number. People with 10000 jumps are still capable of the same mistakes someone makes with 10 jumps. As someone recently told me "It's not about the numbers, it's what you do with them." Jump numbers to me means someone has been involved longer and probably has more money to spend on jumping than I do. (And might be a little smarter on how things work, but does not excuse mistakes) Call it a rant get pissed off post your negative comments.. I don't care. I'm sick of new people (and some old) asking questions and being told to update the profile before they get a suitable answer. For fucks sake I could put in 500 jumps and most people would not know the diff if I had done them or not. If someone asks a legit question about skydiving or shows an interest in our sport, instead of being dicks and judging them by what their profile says, how bout you answer the fucking question and educate them. You just MIGHT tell them something that will save thier ass or that of someone else someday. A profile and numbers does not dictate how good or bad someone is at a given task. Like the people bitching about how myspace is the "I love me" place. Are you going to tell someone they are a piece of shit and have no right to post a blog because they did not update their profile? Seriously.. it had to be said.. it might of been said before but someone had to say it. Stop putting so much emphasis on how up-to-date a profile is and the numbers to go with it. Call it a rant if you want, I'm just sick of people being turned away because of a profile. During one of my posts I was asked to update my profile. I guess the profile determines how good a flyer you are and how much safety you bring to the sport. In that case let me update mine to the fullest extent in the hopes it will save me from fucking up in the near future. Thanks for reading this essay. I will be awaiting negative replies and grades on word use and punctuation.Millions of my potential children died on your daughters' face last night. labrys 0 #2 December 30, 2008 My guess is that while anyone can put anything in a profile, truthful and accurate info in a profile engenders more trust. You rarely see someone being prompted at fill in a profile when they ask a generic question. You see it when someone asks an inflammatory question. I guess it's also pretty common to ask newer people to fill in a profile so that they can be referred to someone in their vicinity if necessary.Owned by Remi #? JohnRich 4 #4 December 30, 2008 This reply is not referring to you. When members put information in their profile, it ought to be the truth. When people claim D-numbers that don't exist yet, or make outrageous claims for jump numbers compared to their time in the sport, or have other inconsistencies, it makes them look like liars. And people who lie about their jump experience can't be trusted to give good advice. It's a sign of a psyche that is being deceptive towards others, and when it comes to safety, this is unacceptable. If you don't have much experience, that's fine. But people need to know that background to help judge what you say, and how to respond. It doesn't mean that low experience will always mean bad advice, but it's one factor in determining the perspective or legitimacy of that advice. Likewise, high experience does not always mean good advice. However, a betting man will accept high experience advice any day over low experience advice. Coincidentally, just a few days ago, I called someone out about inconsistencies and inaccurate info in their profile. My post was deleted, I suppose because it was considered "rude". So that person is still out there, dispensing advice, while claiming vast jump experience that he doesn't actually have... What this tells me is that this forum values politeness as more important than safety. "Honesty is the best policy."
nomal2day 0 #5 December 30, 2008 Hey Josh (see, I read your profile), you gonna need the whole upper deck of that A380 for yourself if you get so mad!Seriously though, you make a valid point. While there are no doubt some who just join the board to troll and can sometimes be identified as such by a total lack of anything on their profile, mostly queries are genuine and can be answered easily and possibly/ probably with something of value to the OP. Hey, nobody is forcing a reader to respond; if someone doesn't agree with the questioners intentions or apparent level of laziness, it's easy to click on to the next post and not comment. The vast majority of folks here are here for the fun and fascination of skydiving, and I for one sure am grateful to all who take the time to pass on their experience and lessons in a friendly and helpful way. So we'll enjoy the thrills and fun of our sport, and leave the profiling to the guys at the TSA. It's their job, after all! 'To fly is heaven, to freefall is divine' 'You only need 2 tools. Tuna-Salad 0 #7 December 30, 2008 Not mad. I just find it irritating when someone asks a question and people tell them to update their profile if they want an answer. As the marine life said earlier about profiles.. Just because what someone has does not make it true. I could say 1000 jumps with 5 years in the sport and no license number. I will take the upper deck of the a380 to myself, that way when someone shits their pants or farts at altitude I don't have to smell it. I get it, but at the same time I feel way too much emphasis is put on the profile. Someone said something to me about it on one of my posts but I was not offended. It only caught my attention when reading through the posts of others and seeing it said so many times. Millions of my potential children died on your daughters' face last night. LisaH 0 #9 December 30, 2008 I'm very new to these forums. But, from what I've seen, there are people who log on to just dig for information. They don't fill out their profile and ask a lot of questions. Non-skydivers looking for shit to stir and stuff to publish or use negatively. I think some people here are leery of that. With good reason.Be yourself! MooOOooOoo

gearless_chris 1 #12 December 30, 2008 I'm glad I could make your day John, happy to do it . Since you didn't think boob (8008) was funny I put it back to 420, I shouldn't have to explain that number. I'm glad you pointed out my typo in my D number, that was an accident. I tried giving you my real jump numbers but you blocked my PM's . You're not supposed to make personal attacks on here, especially in the incidents forum, they take that area pretty serious. I think it's funny that some of these people take life so seriously, that someones profile info can make them so mad. Maybe people should take up some more hobbies. Skydiving is supposed to be fun. Folks...read first and use your judgment as to the validity of the posting. I would caution anyone from blindly taking and executing advice from anyone regardless of jump numbers or how low the license number is. High numbers can be just as wrong as low numbers and it has happened many, many times. My reality and yours are quite different. I think we're all Bozos on this bus. Baksteen 84 #24 December 30, 2008 I totally agree that in themselves jump numbers are inadequate to judge a person's experience within say, a given discipline. They DO provide a crude overall indication however, especially combined with an accurate licence (number). Regarding ie. downsizing there is no way in heck that a stiletto is appropriate for someone with five jumps, while it *might* be for someone with 500 jumps. By the way, that *might* is there because some "experienced" jumpers who regard parachutes merely as something to get down to earth alive and who barely know how to flare should probably stay on Manta's - even though they "meet the requirements" for a stiletto. "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom

I guess next time I'll pick 35007 for my jump numbers, it'll make it easier for people to know I'm goofing off. Bob Sinclair has been jumping for 63 years now. He says people don't believe he only has around 3,000 jumps. Of course 2,000 of them are on rounds. He's still awfully proud of his rip cord too .
