Andy_Copland 0 #1 January 2, 2009 I keep getting a blue scren of death on start up before windows loads. It happens then goes away after constant on/off but its annoying as fuck. Physical memory dump with the technical info being: 0x000000c5 (0x004e0043, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0x8054b52d)1338 People aint made of nothin' but water and shit. Andy_Copland 0 #3 January 2, 2009 Not sure Dave, this is the first time i've wrote it down out of frustration. Its a few years old and running XP but it was dropped (hard) on the floor and it stopped reading disks, infact the whole thing wouldnt even open or shut so i took it apart and put it back together a few times without any success then suddenly yesterday it started working after about my 4th try. I'm starting to think its a lost cause and something might be fucked up beyong repair 1338 People aint made of nothin' but water and shit. Until morale improves, the beatings will continue. AggieDave 6 #4 January 2, 2009 So its a laptop that has experienced some really hard drops? It could be something as simple as the memory getting loose from getting dropped. Pop the access plate on the bottom of the lap top. Check the seating and dust it out with canned air. Continue to see if the memory address is the same.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."
Andy_Copland 0 #5 January 2, 2009 OK it just shit on me again and before i could write the new info down it restarted. So its nt always the same. theonlyski 8 #8 January 2, 2009 eh, possibly a driver issue... most likely if its gonna work, formatting it and reloading may work... it could be physical damage to any of the moving peices (hard drive) or something knocked out, or possibly off thier solder points."I may be a dirty pirate hooker...but I'm not about to go stand on the corner." iluvtofly DPH -7, TDS 578, Muff 5153, SCR 14890 I'm an asshole, and I approve this message
Andy_Copland 0 #9 January 2, 2009 I formatted it yesterday and still no joy, twice actually hence im thinking its a hardware issue. Problem is i dont wanna go grab a new hard drive when its something as silly as what Dave said.1338 People aint made of nothin' but water and shit. Until morale improves, the beatings will continue. theonlyski 8 #11 January 2, 2009 well, take out the hard drive and see if it completes its POST without any errors... maybe if you have a bootable cd or thumbdrive, try to boot off that. it is odd that it let you re-install your os (especially xp) with a bad memory module, its pretty picky about the memory being funny. id bet hard drive, but even that sounds like a stretch because its loading the os without throwing errors"I may be a dirty pirate hooker...but I'm not about to go stand on the corner." iluvtofly DPH -7, TDS 578, Muff 5153, SCR 14890 I'm an asshole, and I approve this message
ryoder 1,590 #12 January 2, 2009 You could download the Ubuntu Linux DVD and run that w/o installation. If that works OK, then the problem is likely the hard drive."There are only three things of value: younger women, faster airplanes, and bigger crocodiles" - Arthur Jones. AggieDave 6 #14 January 2, 2009 Well, the FSB could be bad, but I've seen the same errors with loose or dirty connections with the RAM. On the HD side, the MBR could have crapped its pants, that's an easy fdisk fix.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." On the HD side, the MBR could have crapped its pants, that's an easy fdisk fix. ive tried loading windows xp on a computer with some bad ram on more than a dozen occassions, and every single time, it failled installation at some point. its really a pain in the ass. yeah, im thinking its the HDD, if its POSTing, and can boot a CD, then money is on the HDD. If the computer was running and the heads werent parked, it could have caused physical damage to the drive, not repairable, but may still work. Its important that you actually remove the HDD from the computer to eliminate it from being a problem during the test"I may be a dirty pirate hooker...but I'm not about to go stand on the corner." iluvtofly DPH -7, TDS 578, Muff 5153, SCR 14890 I'm an asshole, and I approve this message
AggieDave 6 #16 January 2, 2009 I agree. I've gotten XP to install on a system with a malfunctioning FSB before, which was surprising. Seeing if it will post with out the HDD is a good trouble shooting step. Also dumping the MBR is a good idea if it has been corrupted. You are right, though, if the HDD or another component was physically damaged due to abuse, then all is for not.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." Tokter 0 #20 January 2, 2009 If you got to: Control Panel/System/Advanced(tab)/Startup and Recovery/Settings(button) There you can uncheck the Automatically restart checkbox. That gives you time to write down the blue screen information. Look for the stop code, something like this: Stop 0x0000000A or IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL And for the mentioning of a file, something like this: Ntfs.sys That should help determine what causes the crash. theonlyski 8 #24 January 2, 2009 thats entirely possible but that error points to a faulty driver for something or another... have you tried safe mode yet?"I may be a dirty pirate hooker...but I'm not about to go stand on the corner." iluvtofly DPH -7, TDS 578, Muff 5153, SCR 14890 I'm an asshole, and I approve this message
