lippy 918 #1 January 20, 2009 I've launched a few bitch-sessions about my job on here before, but I'm really starting to get tired and thinking of getting a job that allows a life on the side. Last night I didn't sleep at all and while sitting here I found a job posting that really interested me and I think I'm a good prospective candidate for them. I sent my application in only 15 hours ago so I'm not really expecting to hear anything back yet, but I'm wondering where to go from here. Assuming I don't hear back from them, should I call? If I call, should I just ask for 'The HR guy who received my resume'? I searched on facebook and the company has a group on there, I'm not sure if it's stalkerish to just drop a message to one of those guys and ask what the deal is with the place and who I need to talk to. I want to be agressive with these guys because I need a change in my work and this company has a good feel (back to speaking English every day and skydiving on a regular basis, and the company seems really cool too). I've been out of the job market for over 7 years, and I want to appear interested but not desparate. Any thoughts, any tips?I got nuthin
NWFlyer 2 #2 January 20, 2009 LinkedIn might be a better place to do that kind of networking, but Facebook isn't bad, either. It'd be better if you had a mutual connection to someone at that company. If you just call blindly you're probably not going to get anywhere, but if you can somehow get to someone who works there (hopefully through a mutual friend) then that person can find out who the hiring manager is, or find out what the hiring process is, or maybe even refer you through an employee referral program. You're going to have a much better chance of getting your foot in the door with a personal connection than just blindly replying to ads."There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
Gawain 0 #3 January 20, 2009 What she said. Though, calling in a follow up to your application is not a bad option either. If done with tact, and not sounding "desperate", it can display a proper amount of initiative to a perspective employer as well. edit to add: of course if etiquette in Canada typically calls for something different, then don't rely on my US-centric advice...So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! Proper Canadian etiquette would be to bring the HR guy a case of beer and a bottle of moose meat.

shropshire 0 #7 January 20, 2009 A simple (polite) call to the company HR department, to ask if they have received your application, would be perfectly acceptable, here in the U.K at least. (.)Y(.)
