UFC 94 - GSP or BJP?

Recommended Posts

Tomorrow night's fight between BJ Penn and Georges St. Pierre promises to be a great fight.

GSP is the betting line favourite and I think he should win and I'd like him to win but I have this feeling that BJ Penn is going to pull an upset and wind up holding the LW and WW UFC titles by the end of the night.

BJ Penn has gotten by on talent for too long and I think this is the fight that will have motivated him to take himself to a higher level.

What does everybody else think?

I think GSP will take Penn.

In thier 1st fight IIRC Penn won round one.
GSP won the other two due to stamina.

Penn has been working on his cardio in his last few fights and surprised me in a few but GSP is a work horse.

I'f I had to bet I would bet GSP.

The possibility of an upsetis interesting but I think I was only thinking it was possible because of the chance for Penn to have 2 belts.

I'll take GSP for the block ,Alex

Lyoto V Silva
Lyoto does a great job at producing boring fights. But that's his style. He hits and moves ad naseum.
It frustrates the crowd and his opponent.
If Silva shoots and can get his hands on Lyoto I think Silva will take it. But there's a strond possibilty that Lyoto will point him to the win.

Clay V Nate
Is gonna be a good fight. Clay is GREAT Nate is Good(didnt wanna do the rhyme and call him great) but Clay gets overly anxious sometimes. I think Nate will catch him in some submission due to that.
Clay Has the ability to outclass Nate if he fights intelligently.

I'm too bored with Bonnar to comment AND I don't know his opponent.

Eight fights so far and ALL of them have gone the distance. Not one stoppage for any reason. That is unusual.

I was just reading the Sherdog live blog....I'll catch the video online somewhere. I got the impression it was all GSP from the live blog but hearing from you he was that good is nice confirmation.

I heard today that Penn's camp was crying foul about something or other. When I hear that and that BJ left the ring without speaking to the fans it just confirms why I don't like him..... And am glad he got handed some whoopass last night.

Cheers JT,

Murray

Darn good fights! :)
I'm obviously bummed that Bonnar lost, but Jon Jones looked fantastic...especially being only 21 years old. I'll be a Bonnar fan until the end, and I'm still hoping that that is quite awhile from now. I get goosebumps whenever I see the Baba O'Reilly clip with the famous Griffin/Bonnar TUF finale fight.... Jones, though, wow. He threw Bonnar around like a ragdoll and just picked him apart. I think he could've ended the fight if he would've capitalized on the elbow that stunned/dropped Bonnar.

I've always liked Lyoto and thought he's been overdue for a title shot; it seems that he may finally get that chance, and I really really really want to watch him beat down Rashad. Bonnar talked about fighting Lyoto and said that it was the most frustrating opponent he's ever had. I kinda like his style...especially if it'll shut Rashad up!

I loved loved loved the Guida/Diaz fight. My prediction was that Diaz would've won by sumbission, and I was oh so wrong. I like both of those guys, and they made for a great fight! (By the way, I missed out on stalking Guida since I couldn't see his face through his hair...seriously.)

GSP is a machine. BJ Penn still amazed me, though, with his freakish flexibility and getting GSP in his guard in the first round/two-ish.

I know youre a huge bonnar fan but he has not progressed since his glory days of losing to Griffin (who I think will slide back down to the bottom)

But one word for you(actually for Bonnar)

ELBOW!

That spinning elbow was FUCKING PHENOMINAL!
I threw Bonnar face down to the mat.
Credit to Stephan though for waking back up.

I suspect that he was out when he was hit and woke up when he hit the mat.

GSP won it definitively. I dont know why Penn corner would be bitching. I mean except for the fact the GSP obviously had an unfair advantage in the cardio department. They should have made GP run a marathon immediately before the fight to even the playing ground.

Penn walked into the fight with a look of confusion and concern on his face. ONe that said ,to me, 'SHIT, I should've done more."

Apparently someone in GSPs corner rubbed vaseline on his back and shoulders after the first or second round...which is a big no-no. Dana White said that whoever did it should never be allowed to corner another fight. A friend of mine told me that the refs saw it and it was wiped off so they were aware of it. From the sounds of things the outcome certainly didn't hinge on this.

I also should take back my words about Penn leaving the ring without speaking. Apparently they took him to the hospital due to corner and ring physician concerns.

I disagree that he has not progressed. Since his first loss to Griffin, he has beaten several formidable opponents. His losses prior to last night included two champions and Lyoto....he's lost only to the best! (Although, I will debate if Rashad is really the best.) After he beat Schafer, he had an unfortunate injury keeping him out of the ring for over a year. I know that Bonnar will never be a contender for the belt, but I would never f**k with him! I think he still has more great fights in his future in the UFC. I would love to see a Hammil/Bonnar fight someday!
