livendive 8 #1 February 2, 2009 So my daughter recently discovered myspace and of course just *had* to visit all the damned "pimp my page" web pages, and picked up a couple virii that avg & zonealarm seem unable to permanently repair (they respawn after reboots). My hard drive was simultaneously causing some fatal crashes due to a few bad spots on it. A full chkdisk with repairs seems to have eliminated the crashes, but now I'm getting .dll errors every time I boot up in addition to the threat warnings from zonealarm. Is there any credible benefit provided by all the "registry cleaner" programs all over the internets that would repair the .dll problems and hopefully remove any lines in the registry that are respawning the trojans? Based on the way they advertise, I'm suspicious that the cure might be even worse than the disease, but there also seem to be some reputable writers touting them, so I'm not sure. Any of you geeks on here know of a good one that might fit the bill for me? Blues, Dave"I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" Bones 0 #2 February 2, 2009 Not sure if this applies (hopefully not), but I picked up a trojan horse (tinyproxy.exe) from Facebook that affected my registry not allowing me to access the internet. The usual measures didn't work, so I eventually had to reinstall my OS. My computer guy recommended and installed trend micro virus software. I previously had MacAfee. theonlyski 8 #3 February 2, 2009 Dave, download http://www.download.com/Trend-Micro-HijackThis/3000-8022_4-10227353.html Its a VERY powerfull tool, but dont just go deleting stuff, post the log file here and Ill go over it as soon as I see you posted it, Ill tell you what to get rid of. That should fix any of those dll errors you have. Its also helpfull to have the Windows CD for your version so you can do a couple more things too."I may be a dirty pirate hooker...but I'm not about to go stand on the corner." iluvtofly DPH -7, TDS 578, Muff 5153, SCR 14890 I'm an asshole, and I approve this message

regulator 0 #5 February 2, 2009 I would also go and verify if this wasnt malware. You can go to http://malwarebytes.org/ and download the application (its free) and do a spyware scan. You could have run into some spyware or malware that could be affecting your machine. download the most current updates for both and if you are still haivng issues after doing a full scan write back. theonlyski 8 #6 February 2, 2009 Having had both of those A/V suites, I can still tell you, I wont ever pay for one as long as there is AVG Free. The only advantage that Norton, Trend or MacAfee have on AVG is the firewall. And honestly, they slow your computer WAY WAY down. I have uninstalled Norton Internet Security from more than a few systems and put AVG on it. Users reported that the PC never ran faster. And I've never NOT had AVG catch a virus. Usually VERY quicly and sometimes pissed me off because I wanted to see if a drive had one to begin with"I may be a dirty pirate hooker...but I'm not about to go stand on the corner." iluvtofly DPH -7, TDS 578, Muff 5153, SCR 14890 I'm an asshole, and I approve this message

PhreeZone 20 #9 February 2, 2009 AVG misses as much as the other major vendors do. Its all pretty much a zero sum game where Vendor X is better at a certain family then Vendor Y but Y can clean a threat that X missed. With 1 vendor's database pushed over 3 million unique entries earlier this year there is a lot of room for one vendor to miss something and another to pick it up. For free and home AVG is great, for a business it is a horrible idea since it is not enterprise scalable. Malwarebytes catches Vundo related files better then anyone else right now but they miss so many other things on a system its not funny. Home editions of the software is always full of bloat, the corporate is MUCH better.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
theonlyski 8 #10 February 2, 2009 Ok, fair enough. But for the price, I think AVG is the best A/V that I have worked with."I may be a dirty pirate hooker...but I'm not about to go stand on the corner." iluvtofly DPH -7, TDS 578, Muff 5153, SCR 14890 I'm an asshole, and I approve this message
aresye 0 #11 February 2, 2009 ^^^Agreed. I personally use Ace Utilities for junk file removing, registry cleaning, and keeping my computer running spiffy. I originally got the program via warez, but I have long ago actually purchased the program, and it's been worth every penny.Skydiving: You either learn from other's mistakes, or they'll learn from yours. theonlyski 8 #13 February 3, 2009 Macs arent immune to virii... IIRC my roomate was telling me about one that just got out. Messes up alot fo computers because people who owned them said 'i have a mac. there is no need for antivirus software, nobody writes virii for macs!' suckers"I may be a dirty pirate hooker...but I'm not about to go stand on the corner." iluvtofly DPH -7, TDS 578, Muff 5153, SCR 14890 I'm an asshole, and I approve this message

You just have to remove windows and replace it with a real operating system. Fire up a virtual machine (sun's virtualbox is free) with windows when you need your favorite tax program. Linux is like Apple - it serves the general websurf and DTP crowd fine, but isn't all that great for gamers (there's still a lot of games that won't run in a virtualbox, but it seems to be getting better)Mike I love you, Shannon and Jim.
