Imagine how screwed up the SMS guys would have been if they had not been given words but rather five letter code blocks like;

alsfd eoids oomvs osfew bmosf cmisw sogms sofng

That is how you really test Morse code speed.

Wow, that was smokin. In my best geeky teenage days, I could do abt 35 words per minute in Morse code. Had my Bencher iambic paddle keyer tuned like a fine racing machine. But that was 25 years ago, now I could barely make out a letter here and there of what he was keying.

Now, ya gots me wondering if binary can find its roots in morse code?

Pretty sure it's the other way 'round.

Morse's genius was the realization that it was simply more efficient to represent letters that are more often used with fewer elements. For instance, since "e" is the most used letter in the English language it gets the absolute shortest element of all ".".

Have you ever seen this? http://www.learnmorsecode.com/ I was always a stumble bum with MC back in the day, but we had one guy that was so fast with that double thingy that you would just stand there in awe.

Those guys are pretty darn fast! I was never any good with CW, but I am starting to relearn as i study for my General. (even though it isnt required any more, it's kind of fun to do contesting in CW)
Fortunately, I'm adhering to a pretty strict, uh, drug, uh, regimen to keep my mind, you know, uh, limber.
