WatchYourStep 0 #1 March 1, 2009 I recently received an email and I was wondering how I could "track" it down? I have the email address, but don't know who it belongs to. Is there a way I can find the IP address and then figure out where that IP address is located at? Any help would be appreciated. It was sent to my gmail account if that matters. ryoder 1,590 #2 March 1, 2009 Look at the headers. In Thunderbird, that is: View->Headers->All Each host prepends a line beginning with "Received: " to the top of the email. i.e. if you start at the last "Received" line and work your way up, you will be tracing the path of the email. Beware that "Received" lines can be forged."There are only three things of value: younger women, faster airplanes, and bigger crocodiles" - Arthur Jones. PhreeZone 20 #3 March 1, 2009 If it was sent from another free service.. you need court orders to get them to give you that info. If it was from an ISP odds are it was sent though a relay system so there is a hard road ahead of you on that route. Look at the headers of the email and it might help but beyond that you are usually looking at a really hard fight to get the info.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com

bluesilver30 0 #5 March 1, 2009 chances are if this is some spam mail or other malicious type of thing, it was spoofed. it it's from a single dumbass, you can get the sending email address... but that's about it. no physical location will be associated with it. TheBachelor 5 #6 March 3, 2009 There are services where you can paste in the full headers, and it will trace them back to the REAL source, not the spoofed address. One that I have used is www.spamcop.net. I'm sure there are others. There are battered women? I've been eating 'em plain all of these years...
