iluvtofly 0 #1 March 4, 2009 I know my computer is on it's way out. It's 6 years old, the hard drive clicks when I turn it on and I get at least 15 error messages everytime I turn it off. But now I think it's just plane possessed. Earlier this evening I plugged in my ipod to put some new songs on it. Afterwards I "ejected" it but left it plugged in so it could charge. Moments ago I turned on my printer...somehow this caused my ipod to resync with with computer and itunes turned itself on. (I do not have my computer set up so that itunes automatically turns on when i plug in my ipod.) Can anyone explain this phenomenon to me??? Or is my computer closer to death then I thought? GogglesnTeeth 6 #2 March 4, 2009 I have found that if I have my I-pod charging and I sync my Treo through the USB cable, the I-Pod tries to sync again. I believe it is a USB issue. When the treo is plugged in to sync, the computer sees the new usb device along with the old one and activates both of them. jcd11235 0 #4 March 4, 2009 I'm not sure how the Windows version handles auto-starting iTunes when an iPod is plugged in, but in OS X, the task of starting iTunes when the iPod is plugged in (different from auto-syncing, which is an iPod preference) is handled by a small program called iTunes Helper, which starts up, by default, upon computer startup (actually user login). Removing iTunes Helper from startup items keeps iTunes from starting automatically when an iPod is plugged in. iTunes Helper is (in OS X) contained within a sub-folder in the iTunes.app folder, but operates as a separate application. Note that I haven't taken the time to verify that iTunes v. 8.x handles the auto-launch the same as iTunes v. 7.x, but I haven't seen any indication that it works differently. As previously suggested, it sounds as though it is a USB issue, not an iTunes/iPod issue, that causes your machine to thing the iPod is freshly plugged in when you turn on your printer. Also, when hard drives click, that is usually a Very Bad Sign®. Most likely the drive is near failure. mnealtx 0 #5 March 4, 2009 Quote I'm not sure how the Windows version handles auto-starting iTunes when an iPod is plugged in, IIRC, you can uncheck "open itunes when this ipod is plugged in" within itunes itself - at least, within windows. jcd11235 0 #6 March 4, 2009 Quote In other words, save the porn? That depends. If she's a conservative, she should back it up, because she probably paid for it. If she's a liberal, she was probably able to download the very same files for free after a thirty second Google search, and can perform the same search and download the files again after replacing the hard drive. regulator 0 #9 March 4, 2009 The important thing you disclosed was that your hard drive has been making a 'clicking' sound. Speaking for an IT consultant background, I'd back up your data ASAP as this is just begging for a BSOD. Then when you get the BSOD it will be too late to back up your data. Make sure you do it quickly because its a miracle the drive is even spinning at this point since its already making the clicking sounds.
iluvtofly 0 #10 March 4, 2009 It's been making the clicking sounds for a good 6 months now.
