1969912 0 #4 March 8, 2009 Bummer. I was taught by my parents to always look back along the bikepath/shoulder before right turns. It's burned into my reactions. jcd11235 0 #6 March 8, 2009 QuoteKeep your head on a swivel and take the headphones outta your ears. Yep. I wasn't using my iPod. As a rule, I don't while riding on/beside the street. I'm usually pretty good about seeing and anticipating cars turning right, because I know from experience that most drivers fail to look to the right before turning. I'm not sure how I missed this one, but I did. I had the right of way, but it takes two people to have a collision, so I'm as much to blame as the driver.Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! downwardspiral 0 #7 March 8, 2009 I ride my motorcycle with 1 earphone in. With my helmet on it presses on it in such a way that it isn't loud but I can still hear it. But yeah if a cager does something stupid that catches me off guard I'm more pissed at myself for not seeing it earlier than I am with the cager. Because well....cagers suck! www.FourWheelerHB.com

Andy9o8 2 #9 March 8, 2009 Wait a minute - I'm not sure if I'm picturing this correctly. If Motorist is making a right turn on red, and in doing so Motorist collides with a bike/ped who's crossing the street, are you referring to a bike/ped who's crossing against the red? monkycndo 0 #10 March 8, 2009 I agree all drivers need to look before turning right on a red light. I can only assume you mean the peds/bikes will be walking/cycling from the driver's right to left crossing in front of the driver while s/he is looking left for oncoming traffic before turning right. As a pedestrian, if I don't see the driver come to a complete stop and I don't see them look at me, I don't step off the curb. My neighborHood is known for crappy drivers in a hurry or trying to look cool. I'll happily wait for the next light if a car needs to go before me even though I have the right of way. If I am correct in assuming the situation you describe, the cyclist is riding against traffic either on the street or sidewalk. At least in the US, a bike is governed by the vehicle code and is to follow the rules of the road. So it shouldn't be on the sidewalk or riding against traffic.50 donations so far. Give it a try. Correct. QuoteAs a pedestrian, if I don't see the driver come to a complete stop and I don't see them look at me, I don't step off the curb. A good rule, and one I typically follow when walking. Or, I'll walk behind the car trying to turn. Unfortunately, it's not really practical at night, when I can't see into vehicles. QuoteIf I am correct in assuming the situation you describe, the cyclist is riding against traffic either on the street or sidewalk. I was riding on the sidewalk. QuoteAt least in the US, a bike is governed by the vehicle code and is to follow the rules of the road. So it shouldn't be on the sidewalk or riding against traffic. I think it varies by state, or perhaps city/county. Here, in Orlando, when riding on the street, cyclists are governed by vehicle code. However, they aren't prohibited from riding on sidewalks, at least not in practice. None of three LEO's from two different jurisdictions mentioned anything about not riding on the sidewalk last night. W/r/t safety, maintaining the lowest speed differential among traffic is the best practice, so I ride my mountain bike on sidewalks (when they exist) on any streets with a speed limit over 30-35 mph.Math tutoring available. Andy9o8 2 #14 March 8, 2009 It's state-by-state. Florida does allow bicycles on sidewalks: Quote Sidewalk Riding (see Section 316.2065, F.S.) When riding on sidewalks or in crosswalks, a bicyclist has the same rights and duties as a pedestrian. That being said, many states and provinces do not allow bikes on sidewalks. Lesson: Know your location's laws.
floridadiver81 0 #15 March 8, 2009 I had a close call a few weeks ago concerning this exact situation. I was leaving my complex making a left turn and i didnt look right(there is a center pull out lane so its not nessessary to looks for cars coming fromt he right). As i made the turn i had to stop because there was a runner coming fromt he right. I learned though...now i look!"Age has absolutely nothing to do with knowledge, learning, respect, attitude, or personality." -yardhippie "Fight the air, and the air will kick your ass!!!
