CB Radio & Police Scanner

Recommended Posts

Ever since I was a id I've always liked the idea of CB radios & police scanners; I find it fascinating to be able to know what are the unseen things that are going on around me.

Not that I could afford it now, but sometime this summer I would like to put both in my car. I have to worry about bills, needs & obligations right now before I think about toys. But I guess I'm wondering who out there is the curious type like me, and if you have said equipment.

The 1 foreseeable problem I have is how I'm going to do the wiring and how am I going to plug it all in. Between the GPS, satellite radio I'm already having to think of logistics, in terms of wiring & where to plug it in (I have 1 car lighter jack). To add a CB radio & police scanner to the mix is beyond my creative means.

Before you sink a big pile of cash into such a radio, do a little homework in your area and see what kind of radio system is in use around there. A lot of communities are moving to "trunking" (I think that's what it's called, I'm sure some of the more techno-savvy users here will be able to give more detail.

The issue at hand is that a bank of frequencies will be used by a community; the same frequencies will be used by police, fire, and EMS for example. It allows a community to get by while maintining fewer frequencies. But, the transmissions are encoded so that if an EMS call goes out, only the EMS folks hear it. If a Fire call goes out, only the Fire folks get bothered. If your individual radio isn't "given permission" to decode the transmission, you're out of luck.

We used to run everything on 800MHz here, we just started using a trunking system a few months ago. We still tone out our calls on the 800MHz (so everybody's personal pagers still work), but from that point on it's all trunked. That means that in this neighborhood, everyone in Scannerland can hear the original toning, but nothing after that. It's kind of like sitting in a movie theater and watching only previews.

Why do you want a CB radio? If you're really interested in two way radio communication, get an amateur radio license.

You might also check your state law on possession of a police radio. Most states won't allow you to have it in your car unless there is a specific purpose for it. The exemptions are defined in the state legislative code. In many states, an fcc licensed amateur radio operator is one of those exemptions.

As for the installation ... there is an online forum called batlabs (http://www.batlabs.com) that has a wealth of that type of information. Most of it pertains to Motorola radio equipment, but there is also a lot of general information there.

That being said, a CB is a waste of plastic. I have one in the motorhome and the only thing it is good for is finding out why you are stuck in traffic.

That is because your not running a "big radio" I bet you can't even get across the median with that thing and that is why you end up in traffic jams & not going around them......:D:D:D

You need a big radio if you want get out. Get you a peeked & tuned early 80's cobra 29 LTD classic and run two antennas and pass each one through a Texas star DX 500 liner amp (one amp each side) and see how well you get out then, you'll be talking to the space station....;)

FYI- Resaca Ga. is where you'll find one of the best radio men around, across the street from the flying J is his CB shop and you too can get a big radio.;)

None of that really matters. I can't stand to listen to the fucking truckers for more then 1min37sec.

I am a "fucking trucker" and I can't stand listening to the CB for more than 1min.
Unless the weather is bad, or I'm talking with a company driver I'm travelling with the thing is off.
It is so full of garbage. It's worse than SC.

Rafflers, save your money or get an amateur radio. And be careful with the police scanner in the car. It's illegal in most places.

Not quite true - they sell Trunking Scanners, that work just like the radio in the squad car, etc. I have an old Radio Shack Pro-95, got it off Ebay for about $40 over 5 years ago. It's a trunking scanner, but also can be used on the 800mHz system as well. I hear everything on my scanner that I hear when on duty at the ambulance station.

It also runs on batteries. If I put the new AA lithium duracell's in, it runs for about two months with it being on for about 10 hours a day (I listen at work with earphones, since I'm not allowed to have my pager on to let me know when dispatch needs me - the joy of being an officer...)

If you go to Radio Shack or some other radio store, they can hook you up nicely, and will even program all of the frequencies in for you so you don't have to input them one by one.

It is called an "echo chamber". Some people think it is cool. I remember back in the seventy's when anything over four watts was illegal. We used to picture the FCC riding around in vans looking for illegal high power broadcasters that were intefering with television signals. :D:D:D

Anybody remember moon rakers? I had a set. B|

who have so much reverb in their CB transmitters that they sound so far down in a well you can't understand a word they say?

Yeah that does get on your nerves. I used to hate that.

There's some really good hand held scanners that will do pretty much what you want them to.

Ditto that. I have a cheap handheld programable I use at work. I work in a station and keep it in my room. The fire department usually gets dispatched sometimes anywhere from 2 seconds up to a minute before we get toned out so it gives me a heads up on calls (really nice when ya gotta do "whatever" before running out the door for god knows how long) anyways, I also have CHP and a couple other channels on it (up to 200 programable).
You can pretty much google all the channels for your area....handhelds nice because you can take it wherever.....

4 watts is still max legal for CB. Linear amps are still illegal, but common as all hell.

And I was only kidding calling myself a "fucking trucker", I just hate the idiots out there on the radio as bad as Cspencefly.
