Kia Sportage

Recommended Posts

As some of you know I'm in the market for a new vehicle.I ruled out the Wrangler, and the Liberty.Took a test drive in a Sportage and kinda liked it.The price and warranty is great, but still not sure.
Anyone out there got one and can help shed some light on these vehicles for me?
Thanks,
Bry

No - but a friend of mine has a Kia (?) People Carrier (mini-van?) and loves it. He says that they are reliable and have good customer service.

But have you looked at a Landrover Freelander 2? clicky - It's a proper 4x4 and not a hair dressers car like so many of them (BMW for example - is shite off road and should never leave asphalt)

My neighbor has one and likes it, great price etc.

..but told me the other day he wishes he'd have hung onto his Subaru instead of trading it in, feels it was a better vehicle.

Well,2 things there. One is it is out of my price range and two the nearest dealer is about 50-60 miles away.
Do you know how the Sportage does off-road? I'm not looking for anything for serious 4 wheelin but would like to play abit.
That's my other reservation about them

Thanks. That's the selling point, the price and warranty. How does he feel about it's off road capabilities?

I'll ask him...I know they don't do anything hardcore off roading, like the Subaru they had, it probably gets the gravel road / muddy field on fishing trips type workout.

I really do not know a lot about Kia except that they are owned by Hyundai. I personally own a Hyundai Santa Fe and love it. My wife and I have put 30000 miles on it and have had no problems. I tow a 3500 LBS trailer up to the mountain to go snowmobiling and while that is over the listed towing capacity the Santa Fe does just great. My brother and father both own a Suzuki XL7 which is the approx. the same size as the sportage and Santa Fe. They both love theirs and went with Suzuki mainly because unlike Hyundai and Kia (which their warranty applies the 10/100,000 to original owner) the Suzuki follows the vehicle so 10/100,000 applies to the 2nd, 3rd etc owners.

I heard that they are a piece of junk. I never owned one but know people who do/did. I had a Grand Vitara for 5 years and couldn't wait to get rid of that thing, took a hit in the trade in too despite the fact that it was in great condition. Go for a Honda or Subaru if you can, and save yourself a lot of headaches. Kias are cheap for a reason.

My wife had one that we sold when some problems came up with it. I dont know where you live but in snow the 4x4 sucks. The vehicle just isn't heavy enough and it gets stuck very easy. I replaced the neutral safety switch, starter, water pump, climate control cluster, high beam switch, and thermostat. When I sold it the struts and strut caps were shot and needed some other front end work done. That was in just 2 years. It was at the time my fiance's car so we sold it and bought another car which we still have today. Which funny enough is at the dealer at this moment with a recall and getting the front wheel bearings replaced for the second time under warranty.

What year was it? Seems like he warranty is to god to pass up and the price is so reasonable.

I believe it was a 98. Read the fine print on that warranty. A lot of the times it's only drive and powertrain that is covered under warranty. It was an alright car. Nothing to brag about but the nickle and dime stuff drive me nuts.

Buy quality and cry only once!

I had a Kia Sportage as a loaner for a few days while my car was at the shop (a deer ran into my car).
It was just a piece of shit car. It was almost brand new, had maybe 1000 miles on it and it felt just PLASTIC all over. Strange quirking sounds from it when hitting a minor bump in the road... I'd never dare to take it off road.... >:(

Most people will agree that Toyota and Honda, and Nissan rank far above the Kia, Hyundai and Suzuki brand names, however if their products are so superior to the others why is their standard warranty 3 years/ 36,000 miles. When I went to buy a new car/suv I looked at the those three first but was not impressed with the price and lack of warranty. My wife drives our Santa Fe and drive a Hyundai Elantra that I have put 114,000 miles on and out side of standard maintenance I have not had to touch it and it runs great.

I have 3 friends who have owned Sportages. All of them loved them. Big or small driver, there's ample room & off road is a breeze. Ground clearance is too low for my liking, but the low overall weight is great for sand.

I think it might be one of the best value for money SUV's out there.
A VERY MERRY UNBIRTHDAY TO YOU!!!

I'm actually looking at crossover SUVs or Wagons right now as well.

I'm still in the early stages but am considering the VW Tiguan, VW Sportwagen, Toyota RAV4, and Nissan Rogue... I haven't driven any of them yet... and I lean towards a compact SUV because I would like to have a towing capablility and a Wagon doesn't generally have the ability to add a towing package.

the problem is that there are so many options available that I often don't know where to start... B|
