BillyVance 35 #1 March 18, 2009 I've seen the infomercials on TV for these handy gadgets. They're pricey for sure, but does anybody have one? And do you like it? I have enough home improvement projects to do that I just don't have the expensive tools that makes doing them easy. This one looks like I could do about anything with it. https://www.4multimaster.com/"Mediocre people don't like high achievers, and high achievers don't like mediocre people." - SIX TIME National Champion coach Nick Saban
LisaH 0 #2 March 18, 2009 That looks like a pain in the butt. I bet the attachments break easily. I'll stick with my regular drill and Dremel. Be yourself! MooOOooOoo
jimmytavino 16 #3 March 18, 2009 My brother showed me that tool back last fall... he had just gotten one, and believe it or not.. those blades and attachments are very strong and durable.. He spoke highly of it , saying it took the place of a Jig saw or sawzall. for lots of rework tasks. The tool works on the basis of vibration/reciprocation..and is much easier to control "freehand", than many other power tools... It can cut lots of materials, and reach into lots of tight spots. can be used for cutting openings for outlet or switch boxes. seems very useful for retrofit work, and remodeling. the offset blade attachments allow you to get right into corners, and it cuts, very powerfully.... he did say it was pricey but found it very useful. I only just recently started to see commercials about it. It is quite heavy in weight, and rather well built... and He did give it a favorable critique. jmy
BillyVance 35 #4 March 18, 2009 Thanks. Yes, I have been doing home improvement projects in my house for some time, and this tool could have saved me a lot of time and swear words. I have had to make do with what I have, which takes forever. Like removing a studded wall that was first assembled horizontally, then raised into place and locked in on top by a 2nd stud and then the ceiling joists. Taking the wall out was easy, it was a non-load bearing wall. It was a bitch trying to cut the top stud out because it overlapped the other walls, and I needed to cut through that at the ends with a special handsaw that's used for cutting the bottoms of door trims at the floor. I'd had it for some time when I was replacing all the doors in the house. I could have used this multimaster tool to cut through a floor joist to make room for pvc drain piping that's being relocated. I made do with a cordless drill and wood drill bits... not the prettiest sight. I'd rather spend as little time as I can in that crawl space. Since I have a lot more work to do, after the laundry room is done, I will strip out the guest bathroom and completely redo it, and that means taking out another wall and moving a doorway, lots more work. Not to mention flooring too. Looks like this new tool will be very useful. monkycndo 0 #5 March 19, 2009 Fein makes very good tools. There is a reason they cost that much. They are worth it. There are some knock offs of it. If you only use it occasionally, a cheaper one might be worth it. If you only want to buy it once and use it frequently, the Fein is a good choice.50 donations so far. Give it a try. DavidB 0 #6 March 19, 2009 I have limited experience with that main tool but with attachments made specifically for the commercial glass business. This was 6 or 7 years ago. As stated the attachments are surprisingly robust, but the tool is quite expensive. I did about 60% of the finish carpentry in our house 5 years ago with basic hand tools & a 5" circular saw. If you can justify the cost of the Fein, go for it. The reason we had one in the glass business was because the owner has a tool fetish & liked to throw away money, IMHO, on tools he didn't need. When the only tool you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail. tkhayes 348 #10 March 19, 2009 I just bought the Rockwell version on Amazon for half the price of the Fein. 72 piece kit for $179 or something like that. I bought the diamond blade to cut through installed ceramic tile in my bathroom shower to install some new ceramic shelves. It worked great. Cut through grout pretty quickly, and the tile much slower, but it took some steady pressure and it was easy to steer, no slipping or jumping around. All in all a good buy I think. I will use it for other things for sure. it generates A LOT of heat. the blade and front gear housing got VERY HOT during the cutting of the tile. and it makes a good bit of noise
