cocheese 0 #8 March 30, 2009 Hell, we used skate across the lake while holding a garbage bag on a windy day and i think we went faster than the wind. A simple ice boat can double the wind speed.

A simple ice boat can double the wind speed. How? As you approach the speed of the wind that is pushing you wouldn't the bag deflate? If you go faster than the wind that is pushing you, wouldn't the bag invert and become drag?I'm not usually into the whole 3-way thing, but you got me a little excited with that. - Skymama BTR #1 / OTB^5 Official #2 / Hellfish #408 / VSCR #108/Tortuga/Orfun
akjmpplt 0 #10 March 30, 2009 The wind isn't "pushing" you. The sail/wing generates lift. As you move forward the apparent wind increases and the apparent direction it is coming from moves forward. The apparent wind for his vehicle was over 126 mph.SmugMug

JohanW 0 #12 March 30, 2009 A sail is a wing. That means the lift it produces is not in the direction of the wind, but at an angle to it. Then the wing is producing lift from the relative wind instead of the absolute wind, which you get more and more of, and you can go a hell of a lot faster than the absolute wind speed as long as you're not trying to move directly into the relative wind. Ever wonder how sailing ships can move into the wind? At greater speeds than while moving with the wind? With the wind, they get pushed by drag. Into the wind, they get pulled by lift.Johan. I am. I think.
JohanW 0 #13 March 30, 2009 I see I got beat as well. And had the English jargon wrong - relative wind instead of apparent wind. At least I learned something. Johan. I am. I think.
DJL 235 #14 March 30, 2009 QuoteHell, we used skate across the lake while holding a garbage bag on a windy day and i think we went faster than the wind. A simple ice boat can double the wind speed. You're talking about going downwind with your trash bag and you can't go faster than the wind. An iceboat can reach speeds up to 10 times faster than the wind although that can't be scaled into 20mph winds equaling 200mph of speed since you run into serveral different constraints."I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher
JohnMitchell 16 #15 March 30, 2009 Did the Greenbird have to turn around and make a speed run the other direction to have a record? That's the requirement with other speed records. What were the ground winds that day? Looks like gusting to 35+. Just curious what multiple of wind speed they achieved.
