Andy_Copland 0 #1 March 30, 2009 So heres the score. Woke up this morning, tried to turn my PC on and the light came on the front, but no whirly gig fans came on and nothing happened. Turned it off, took the side off and had a peek in. Everything was in check as far as attached so i plugged it in and turned it on again. Same thing but i noticed the motherboard light come on and also the fan over the CPU kinda jerked like it wanted to go but couldnt. No mechanical sounds can be heard. So my train of thought is either the CPU is dead, motherboard is dead or the PSU has taken a dump on me and its not giving out the right amounts of power. Anyone else wanna help trouble shoot it?1338 People aint made of nothin' but water and shit. Until morale improves, the beatings will continue.

bwilling 0 #4 March 30, 2009 Probably power supply... that's the first thing I'd swap. You can buy one and test it without even mounting the thing, that way in the unlikely event that it's not the culprit, you could always return it. You could actually check the output of the supply, but even if it tests okay, it could still 'fail' under load and produce the results you're seeing... mircan 0 #11 March 30, 2009 1. I`d start with the battery. The one that powers up the BIOS. If the battery is empty, maybe the BIOS settings were lost so CPU and FSB settings are incorrect too, resulting in computer not want to boot up. 2. Then power supply. 3. Then AN-2. (* mobo and CPU costs more). dudeist skydiver #

I know that people back stateside that are using 110 would flip that little switch to say 220 and nothing but the lights would come on... its an evil trick we used to play. BUT if you ARE using 220, keep it on that."I may be a dirty pirate hooker...but I'm not about to go stand on the corner." iluvtofly DPH -7, TDS 578, Muff 5153, SCR 14890 I'm an asshole, and I approve this message

My old desktop with epox mobo displayed the same symptoms like andy`s. mobo just had little led-two-digit-display that lit up and i was able to troubleshoot. Sometimes it started making sounds from the beeper like when temp is off, or memory is not present. Changing the battery solved the situation. it`s only a couple of $. Power supply, no matter how cheapo-chinese-trash you buy will cost at least double. In the end, I think you can buy both for 20$ and in the old desktop you want those babies changed anyway.dudeist skydiver #

Jump pins 13 & 14 on a standard ATX plug (the one that goes to the motherboard) to turn the power supply on... you can do it with a bent paper clip. theonlyski 8 #17 March 30, 2009 Doesnt sound like the button is the issue I think you meant to short the Power Good. Then once you hit the button, the PS will think that the mobo is getting a good signal. Ive rigged up a couple ATX PS's like that, make cheap regulated 12v bench test boxes."I may be a dirty pirate hooker...but I'm not about to go stand on the corner." iluvtofly DPH -7, TDS 578, Muff 5153, SCR 14890 I'm an asshole, and I approve this message
pwln 0 #18 March 30, 2009 Just go buy a new-used one. If you are in the Columbus, OH area you can just pick it up. http://www.retagit.com I got 2 P4 2.8's with 1024MB of RAM for $180 on Friday. Or spend $50-100 on a PSU that may or may not be the problem.

Tuna-Salad 0 #21 March 31, 2009 pop the battery out of the board.. if that doesn't work.. take the motherboard out of the PC and put it on a piece of cardboard and try to POST it.. (Eliminating the possibility that it might be shorting out) If that does not work, I would suggest that the PSU has taken a crap as someone else suggested. If the cpu had taken a crap it would still turn on but would not boot.Millions of my potential children died on your daughters' face last night.
