JohnRich 4 #1 April 8, 2009 I ran across these animal tracks in the soft sand of a south Texas canyon, while looking for ancient petroglyphs. These were on the Mexican side of the Rio Grande River, across from Big Bend National Park. It was just a short distance from the water. They are unlike the many other animal tracks I'm familiar with out there. I normally see coyote, raccoon, porcupine, bobcat, lion, turkey, deer, javelina, etc. The first I figure may be a turtle. The leg tracks may be unusual because his shell was dragging so heavily on the soft sand, that his feet were sliding as he tried to push himself forward. But I don't see a smooth track in the middle from the shell. And in fact, there's kind of a broken tail mark in the center. So maybe this is a lizard which drags his feet as he moves them forward to take another step. Or how about a sidewinder rattlesnake? The second I guess is some kind of large lizard, or a large rat-like creature like a nutria. Two of 'em walking side by side, or the same one covering the same path twice. The feet are lizard-like with long toes, and he drags his tail behind him. But I've never seen any lizard this large out there in the desert. Does anyone have any knowledge of what critters these kinds of tracks are from?
madhatter 0 #2 April 8, 2009 First is defintely not a snake, your thoughts on a turtle might be right. Second could be nutria, but there're no signs of the webs between the toes. I'm stumped.A VERY MERRY UNBIRTHDAY TO YOU!!! D.S #

wmw999 2,589 #12 April 8, 2009 The second one actually looks like it could be an armadillo; 4 toes on the front and 5 on the rear, and dragging the tail. At least that's what I see, but I'm no naturalist, I can just google Wendy W. There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)

Vote all you want but that doesn't change the fact those tracks were made by a snake just as certainly as the others were made by a small mammal.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver

Misternatural 0 #16 April 9, 2009 Lizards, the first one is some kind of a gecko-note the alternate cadence of it's steps- It's just eaten a meal of crickets at its favorite haunt and it is making a beeline for a hiding place to crash for the day after sensing the two larger iguanas following its trail, they are clearly drunk on fermented agave leaves and are just out messing with the geckos mind, no intention of actually kicking its ass just carousing the strip looking for peyote buttons and talking about fucking and sports.... as usual.Beware of the collateralizing and monetization of your desires. JohnRich 4 #21 April 9, 2009 Snakes - turtles - armadillos? They all sound good. I guess there's no way to really know for certain. But they sure are weird ones! This next two are easy ones - let's see how many of you get it. See the attached photo. Critter #1 in the upper left, and Critter #2 in the lower right.
