MooChooser 0 #1 September 8, 2005 Im currently working for a DZ as pilot and Club kit packer and am in the middle of my AFF training. The AFF rigs are a PD340, Manta 280's and a Balance 260. I've used the PD340 and both Mantas and of the 4 openings i've experienced, 3 have left me in pain for at least 2 days. I had an out of sequence opening on the PD340 which was fully open before it was inflated but the Mantas have just opened fast. We are told that we must flat pack all student canopies and im just wondering what the general opinion on this is. Is flat packing AFF rigs so much safer that its worth the toll that its taking on the bodies of the students who have to use them?
rsibbald 0 #2 September 8, 2005 Flat packing has no bearing on the opening speed compared with a pro pack. Ask some of the experienced packers/riggers to show you some tricks with the slider and/or the nose and/or the tail of the canopy and/or the line stows which may help reduce the opening shock. riggerrob 643 #3 September 8, 2005 Please complete your profile. If your PD340 opened out of sequence, it was probably caused by the wrong size of rubber bands or sloppy line stows. Body position (anything other than stable, belly-to-earth) or a loose harness can also contribute to hard openings.
