JohnRich 4 #1 April 21, 2009 News:Having tattoos 'is a sign of low self-esteem' The body art, increasingly popular with celebrities, could conceal a poor personal opinion of oneself, psychologists have found. The study found that people who had three or more tattoos were likely to have low self esteem... They found that there were four main reasons why people got tattoos - to be rebellious, to belong to a group, for aesthetic reasons and because of a strong emotional attachment... The findings were presented at the British Psychological Society annual conference.Source: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/scienceandtechnology/science/5095591/Having-tattoos-like-David-Beckham-is-a-sign-of-low-self-esteem.html Don't shoot the messenger. DARK 0 #2 April 21, 2009 i dont have a tatoo but im planning a couple and it seems the only negative reason they give is belonging to a group and thats not really that negative? and more than 3 = low self esteem but 1 + two are fine thats good to know

Nataly 38 #4 April 21, 2009 Seems a bit of a stupid study.. If I had to make an educated guess, I'd say that it's probably more common to have a low self-esteem than it is to have a high one!! Although socially people tend to want to give the *impression* that they "don't care what others think", etc., etc.. So really.. The tattoos are probably no more of an indicator of poor self esteem than the colour of one's eyes, or the length of one's hair, or whether one wears jewelry or hats, et cetera. Just my opinion. tigra 0 #14 April 21, 2009 Well someone once posted here that girls with tattoos were more likely to put out. Of course, he also used to always whine about how he could never get a girl to go out with him. Go figure.........I've only got 2 so I guess my self esteem is OK but according to some dateless guy in Australia, I might be a slut.

billvon 3,076 #17 April 21, 2009 >The tattoos are probably no more of an indicator of poor self esteem >than the colour of one's eyes, or the length of one's hair . . . Well, the color of one's eyes are determined purely by genetics. Tattoos (or the length of one's hair, or jewelry, or the kind of car you drive) are the result of personal choice. So they're inherently different than a purely genetic trait. (Not agreeing with the study, just making that distinction.)

Was just suggesting several things that popped into my head.. But choice or not, I'm not convinced it's an *indicator* of self-esteem, but that some people with some tattoos may also just happen to have low self esteem.. But that doesn't mean that people will get tattoos *because* of low self-esteem or vice-versa.. They could easily be *totally* unrelated. And my other point was that I reckon poor self-esteem is probably *more* common that good self-esteem in the first place.. Not based on any reliable source or study, though - just my own opinion!! Agreed, or there could be a reverse correlation. (i.e. people who get lots of tattoos are more likely to _develop_ lower self esteem because how they are treated by other people.) Anyway, according to my recent poll with *more* participants, the average age a skydiver has her first orgasm is less than 16.. Maybe I should also have asked - do you have a low self esteem? Maybe I could publish the results and make some money!!! NOW we're talkin'!!
