Do you think the life insurance company would know something was up...

Just join the military. Health/Dental is free and I pay $25/mo (or very close to it) for a $400K life policy. AND........It cover skydiving (provided your commander approves like mine did).

waiting to go take a pulmonary function test in 2 weeks to (hopefully) prove I don't have a problem with asthma anymore. If I pass I should be in shortly.

Cool. Yeah the asthma thing is a real motherfucker when dealing with the military. If you have it you, for the most part, dont get in.

Thats why I'm getting the pulmonary function test. I haven't had a problem with my asthma in like 5 years. Even though I don't have a problem I'm not too sure that the test will come up with a 'normal' result.

The other thing is the recruiters aren't sure what the wait is for my ankle. Whether its 6 months or just until it looks OK on x-rays. So I basically gave them all my medical records and they are going to send them up to an Army doc to see if it's ok for me to enlist.

I am still in school... until I become ineligible at the end of this semester.

The cheapest health insurance I ever had was the group policy I had when I was a student at Purdue.
Does your school offer something like that?

If there's one thing I've noticed as far as asthma goes, is that if you're a northerner and didn't have asthma or just have a minor case of it, and then you moved south to say FL, GA, MS, AL, TN, etc, more than likely asthma will turn up or intensify in its symptoms. That's only from my personal observations and what my friends and family from up north have said about themselves.

Why would that be? Humidity? Pollen? Dust? If it's the humidity, which I know affected me in the past, up here in the summer we get 98 degree days and 90% humidity pushing the heat index up to like 102 and I haven't have a problem lately. So I'd be used to that. And I know it isn't the area you are talking about but I also lived in AZ for a year and didn't have a problem with my asthma out there. Hopefully it would be the same in the south east.

As far as MOS I'm looking at infantryman. It's one of the few things I think I'd actually enjoy doing.

Just did, for shits and giggles. Lowest was $70/month, highest was $678 Crazy. But there are a lot of options in the under-$200 range with reasonable cost-sharing and deductibles. And that was with my age/gender ... for a younger male it'd likely be even less.

You do realize those online quotes are not set in stone and after getting the individuals medical and other information the cost is re assessed, and generally increases a lot.

Like I said, it is my personal observation... My wife has asthma. She's a Connecticut girl and didn't have that before she moved south. Same thing with a few other northerners who live down here now. No, not all of the transplanted northerners that I know have asthma though.

Hope you pass the test though.

Whether it's further education while you're in that sets you up for an 'outside' job, or an MOS that translates well to an 'outside' job, plan for the long term - you won't be in the military forever.

Best of luck!

I wasn't calling you a liar or saying you were wrong. I was merely asking you if you knew why people have a problem. I assume it has something to do with weather. Heat, humidity, pollen or dust in the air, etc.

I think it all depends on what kind of asthma you have. I had mild exercise-induced asthma when I came in (technically still do). Basically I'll cough all day after I go for a hard run in the winter or at high altitude. It doesn't effect my ability to do my job and I can still outrun almost everybody in my Battery. I'm down at Benning now and the heat/humidity/pollen/whatever doesn't seem to cause me any issues. It seems like your asthma has mostly cleared itself up, so I'd expect your test will go well.
If you do end up in the infantry, make sure you save up your cash so you can go jump at SD ATL. Good luck!

All of that, and air quality, simply put. It hasn't been very good the last couple of decades. [:/] I'm used to it as I'm a southern home boy. My wife lived within 10 miles of the coast. But yes, we noticed that the pollen really affects her allergy-wise, and the pollen levels are at all-time record-breaking highs these days around here. You don't know where you'll be stationed if you get in the military. Then again, I really don't know how the military decides where they send their soldiers.

I would have gone into the military, if they would have accepted "fucking deaf". :D

Not true.

For a Single Individual, A good Policy can be had for about $300 a month (About the same as a lot of people spend on Skydiving, Bar Tabs or other hobbies). Less for other policies with limited coverage.

yes, It is expensive but you do not have to be "rich" to afford your own health insurance.

TANSTAAFL

$300.00 a month, not bad, but how much is the deductable?

My policy is just a few cents more than $11/day, has a $30 copay & $500 hospital deductible for someone in their early 50's. It paid for itself 5 months ago, too. Two days before Thanksgiving I found myself having emergency angioplasty & a stent installed, then getting to spend 3 days in the hospital. I gladly paid the $500 because with the bill came a copy of the hospital's bill to the insurance company for $107.000.00+. :o A couple months later I even get a notice saying my premium is going DOWN!
