Curb Day

Recommended Posts

Apparently there is a movement for everyone to put their still usable junk to the curb this Saturday, 5/16, so others can pick through it and take what they want. It's part "help your neighbor" and part "keep things out of the landfills". Website here.

Sounds like an interesting concept, I think I'll put some stuff out just to see what happens. Anyone else going to participate?

I do that all the time anyway. Stuff that's too bulky to take to the second-hand store, or that's broken but probably repairable. It's just about always gone by the end of the day, hopefully to someone who is happy to get and make use of a freebie.

It's the best kind of recycling.

The town I grew up in had "garbage week"- similar concept, but also, the local garbage collectors would not pick up large objects like furniture, etc. normally.

Where I live now, the garbage truck takes just about anything. We'll put stuff out in the alley and its fair game until the garbage man comes. The funniest was the old galvanized pipes from our house when we had them all replaced with copper. We did it on the DL and live a block away from city hall so I was scared to put everything out in the alley all at once. I was afraid I would get fined for having all that work done without a permit. (we used licensed plumbers who happened to be skydivers doing side work.......) I was scratching my head trying to figure out how to get rid of all the old piping and some guy came by and asked if he could have it. He acted like he had struck gold when he left and we were just so happy to get rid of it!

Thats actually not a bad idea. Hell, my appartment is furnished entirely with donated stuff or stuff that I purchased at very discounted prices (ie my Maytag Atlantis washer/dryer for $500 total). Being military it's quite nice to aquire used stuff for cheap or free and also be able to give that stuff to someone else before a PCS.

I have found that whatever I put on the curb with a 'FREE' sign goes within about an hour.

Oh yeah, I've done that lots of times. I've just never seen a day organized for it before.

We have something similar every year here. The City will come by and collect all of your trash, greenwaste, etc. It's great for getting rid of things and they will recycle, etc.

I get mine out a week early. Last year, only 1/3 of it was left because people would just pick what they wanted out of it.

Thats what I think he is talking about.

I do recall it was a decent Walmart. Not a very good selection of winter gloves that are useful to skydivers though.

There is a mall in Cedartown/Rockmart??:o

Does Wal*Mart count? :P

Hey, I saw a Walmart with a ::: gasp ::: nail salon inside!!! I hadn't a clue about that. And I did sit next to a Craig's List hooker while I got a nail repaired. Very interesting eavesdropping, that's for sure!

It was probably a Super Wal-Mart. Ours has a McDonald's, nail salon, eye doctor, hair salon, tire and oil change, groceries and the other Wal-Mart crap. I'm there weekly.
