kallend 2,131 #1 May 13, 2009 I have a Linksys wireless router at home. It has 2 hard wired desktop PCs and at least 5 laptops of various vintages that all work fine, see each other's shared folders, share 2 printers and connect to the internet. I just bought a new Dell laptop (Win XP). It connects to the router and hence to the internet just fine. The other computers at home all see it and can access the shared folders I set up on it. HOWEVER, the new laptop doesn't see anything else on my network, including the shared printers. WTF? There must be some setting that needs to be changed, but I've tried all the ones I know about. ANy suggestions?... The only sure way to survive a canopy collision is not to have one.
theonlyski 8 #2 May 13, 2009 Make sure that the workgroup is the same. If you got the dell new, it probably has MSHOME set for the workgroup and some computers come with WORKGROUP set. Try this: Start>Run \\(ip address or name of computer)\ OK see if it pulls it up. Ive seen some weird things, and it could be a number of them. If it comes up with the IP and not the name, its a DNS error."I may be a dirty pirate hooker...but I'm not about to go stand on the corner." iluvtofly DPH -7, TDS 578, Muff 5153, SCR 14890 I'm an asshole, and I approve this message

Messed around a bit and now it at least finds the hard wired desktop PC with the printers (Unfortunately I have no idea what I did to make that happen), but it still doesn't see the other laptops although they see it. MakeItHappen 15 #4 May 13, 2009 It's probably a firewall issue on the local new machine. This is what i do. I disconnect from the internet - even when going through a router that has its own firewall. Just unplug the cable. Then turn off all firewalls and see if you can see the other local machines from all the other machines. Once you determine that it is the firewall, you can turn the firewall back on and give permissions to it to talk to other local machines. The other thing it could be (I seriously doubt you have this problem) is a protocol that is not installed. NetBEUI has to be hand installed on XP. (I doubt if that is your problem, unless you are talking to really old computers.) .. Make It Happen Parachute History DiveMaker
BeattheDrums 0 #5 May 13, 2009 Oh the fun of Windows. I've had something similar happen to me at my home and it turned out to be the firewall settings on the computer that couldn't see anything. Were you able to verify the all the computers had the same work group? theonlyski 8 #6 May 13, 2009 Did you try enabling Simple filesharing on the new computer? My computer> Tools View> Use Simple Filesharing (recommended) should be checked. (Its the last one on the list) If the other computers are seeing it, and it is seeing some of them, and the other computers all see each other, it sounds like a computer that forced itself to be the master isnt updating. Try shutting them all down, and rebooting them (with one computer that you want to be the head honcho up and running first) The head honcho computer will force an election on the network saying that it is the master because it was on first. The rest of the computers should report to that master. Quote(name of WHICH computer)? Itself, or the one I want it to connect to? The one you want to connect to. Workgroups are funny, sometimes computers just dont show up.
