VR vs new GI bill

Recommended Posts

So I've heard in the past that the VA vocational rehab program was much better than the GI Bill for those eligible because it covered more and gave you money per month.

Has anyone put it up next to the new Post 9/11 GI Bill? It seems that the new GI Bill would be better than vocational rehab now. Anyone have any experience?

Also, it used to be that in order to use vocational rehab, one could no longer use the GI bill and was refunded for it. Is still true for the new GI Bill?

The new or post 9/11 GI Bill is better than all of the previous GI Bills. However, that doesn't mean it is for everyone as some peoples circumstances may be different and or may get state funded aid that proves to be more advantageous to use than switching to the 9/11 GI Bill. Those who fell under VEAP, as far as I can tell, just got the short end of the stick no matter how you look at it unless they opted to change to the Montgomery GI Bill when they had the chance. For a full break down on the whole ball of wax, check out the VA benefits page here.

I just went through ACAP and the VA rep compared the three, and they are indeed very different animals. I wouldn't go for Voc Rehab unless I was dedicating to a real trade which wasn't "academic" in nature. The Post-9/11 GI Bill seems to me, to be more worth while if you are attending full time. The regular GI bill I think offers a little more flexibility if your living conditions allow...but I am still examining the two GI bills and haven't made any decisions yet.
