Risk Taker = Nut?

Recommended Posts

I rode my motorcycle to work for the first time today. When people came to my cubical, the first question they asked me, "Do you ride motorcycle?" (after seeing my helmet on my desk) I said, "Yes." They look at me like I am crazy. Few months ago, I told my co workers that I am planning to enter skydiving sport. Same Result: looking at me like I am from outer space. Where do I fit in? :S

wait until some random stranger says to you, upon realization you're a skydiver,.... you gotta be pretty stupid to jump out of a perfectly good airplane.

just remember this:

"Yeah well, stupid enough to jump out of a perfectly good airplane but smart enough to be able to do it again" (tm)

but yeah, we're all fucking nuts! :D

You'll have to start boring them with the nuanced differences between being a "risk taker" and a "risk manager."

Skydivers that want to have long skydiving careers manage their risks.

I could preach that in, day in and day out, and I will never get through their head.

Then those are people not worth talking to about the subject at all.

Just a bit of advise before you start skydiving; not everyone cares nor should they. If they don't mention it first, you probably don't need to.

The thing is that everyone's definition of risk varies.. Some people take unnecessary risks without fully weighting out the rewards vs the consequences.. They just want to be "cool".. This is generally a bit nuts..

But if you understand the risks, and you make a conscious decision based on the fact that you feel the rewards outweighs the risks.. That's not so nuts..

No amount of preaching will change people's attitude towards risk.. The only thing that should matter anyway is whether you appreciate the danger, and whether *you* feel comfortable with it. No real need to convince other people..
