keithbar 1 #1 May 28, 2009 just watched tonight's episode. WTF? confirmed but don't know why? this is my theory. they thermite burn's into bottom of the bucket. in a v shape. goes thru. hits the ice. the ice goes from a solid state to a gas( steam) instantly. the result is just like one hit of a steam engine. blows the bucket into the air scattering the remaining powder and BOOM! anyone think I'm right?i have on occasion been accused of pulling low . My response. Naw I wasn't low I'm just such a big guy I look closer than I really am .

I only watch it for Kari now I took three semesters of physics as an engineering student and still find Myth Busters an incredible source of knowledge. For example: After fifteen years in industry I was convinced that contrary to management, marketing, and sales expectations you cannot polish a turd. They proved me wrong, and gave me hope that the next time incompetence rears its ugly head we may still be able to put a customer-friendly high-gloss shine on it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hBj6PonX14A There's also the nostalgia thing where they make explosions and I think of the simpler times when I was a kid and liked to blow things up. gearless_chris 1 #10 May 30, 2009 I don't know about thermite, but the story I heard about aluminum is that if water gets trapped under the surface of the molten aluminum, it changes to steam, then separates into hydrogen and oxygen. You get a steam explosion followed by a hydrogen explosion. Supposedly a cup of water equals a hand grenade in strength. That's the story they used to explain why we aren't allowed to have aluminum cans at work anyway."If it wasn't easy stupid people couldn't do it", Duane. porpoishead 8 #11 May 31, 2009 why would it separate? from temperature alone??? we burn/weld steel with fire underwater @ approx 10k degrees fahrenheit, what causes hydrogen is the current when we make it hot to strike an arc. a pocket of hydrogen with the volume of one cup igniting will ring your bell pretty hardcore, probably kill you dead...if you want a friend feed any animal Perry Farrell
gearless_chris 1 #12 May 31, 2009 I don't know what separates it, that's what they told us at work. They do use electricity to melt the aluminum ore, but I would assume that it's more like an heating element than current running through it."If it wasn't easy stupid people couldn't do it", Duane. Yep, got my bell rung real good like that, and it didn't take much. Couple of buddies came out worse but I'm not sure how much it took. My understanding is the same, it's the electrolysis rather than the heat when we did it.But what do I know?
