Office chair parachute

Recommended Posts

There were a whole bunch of these that tried to hit the market in the weeks after September 11. There are details on a few of them in the forums. Its pretty clear from his design that he has no idea how a parachute needs worn for use out of an aircraft. In the photos its in use as a backrest, in order to get it on you'd have to take it out of the backpad, manage to slip it on to your back and hope that the leg straps have B12 connectors or else you'll never get it on.

Not to mention the fact that he keeps tauting the FAA certified parachute (typically an old 22 or 24 foot flat unvented style) but he makes no mention of the harness being certified. This would be needed if he was planning on using it for an aircraft emergency parachute.

There are no packing instructions online so I'm guessing its got a spring loaded pilot chute in there. That concept is horrible for a building exit. Those other designs usually had you doing some sort of static line rigging to office furnature and then using that static line to open your canopy. If he is using the static line design then for an aircraft bail out he's expecting you to tie off to the crashing airframe and then jump away.

They are all stupid ideas that are more about pushing the panic factor then actually doing something to increase the safety and rescue factors.

I remember seeing a video online somewhere where they were on a live news show demonstrating how these would work in a real emergency situation. Needless to say they bombed horribly when thier volunteer couldn't even figure out how to put the rig on.

It might be a National but he sells a 50 foot static line for $200 also. I have no idea where to clip a static line on a National with out putting it right on the handle. I do like how it says do not use unless you are 500 feet in the air or higher.
