nigel99 627 #1 June 22, 2009 Does anyone know how Facebook generates suggestions? It is just that I do NOT mix work associates and family/friends and yet just logged into facebook to find a "suggestion" of a client of mine. We have no personal interests in common that I know of, the only potential link(s) that I know of are skype and company email. It is not that he has requested to be a friend or that it was an emailed suggestion but the automated "people you may know" type. Obviously I will be pretty upset if facebook are accessing either for suggestions. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived. The disclaimer and End User Agreemant pretty much says that they will, and that all your info is now theirs.I'm not usually into the whole 3-way thing, but you got me a little excited with that. - Skymama BTR #1 / OTB^5 Official #2 / Hellfish #408 / VSCR #108/Tortuga/Orfun
NWFlyer 2 #3 June 22, 2009 Do you have any Facebook friends in common? Is your employer listed in your profile? I've found the "people you may know" feature to be really random at times. I often get people with whom I have no discernible connection (no mutual friends, no FB network in common, etc.). The other day I got one where the alleged connection was "You and Mike both worked at Expedia." I've never worked at Expedia, so I have no idea where that one came from. Even if I had, I wouldn't have listed it in my profile - like you, I'm keeping FB for non-work friends only (though I do have a select few former coworkers on there, it's very limited)."There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. NWFlyer 2 #6 June 22, 2009 I just found something that (at least for me) seems to explain all the suggestions I've received lately where the name sounds sorta-kinda vaguely familiar to me, but we have no mutual friends or network connections. QuoteRemove Contacts Imported using the Friend Finder Facebook uses the email addresses you upload through the Friend Finder to help you connect with friends, including using this information to generate Suggestions for you and your contacts on Facebook. Please click the "Remove" button below if you want Facebook to remove these contacts. Note that it may take some time before your name will be completely removed from Suggestions. I think I used this feature when I first got on FB, and it seems to have imported not just my contacts list, but also anyone I've ever emailed. It could also explain why you're getting suggestions of clients - if you're in their email system somewhere and they do the "Find Friends" thing ... boom ... lots of data exposed to FB. I like FB for what it is, but the more time I spend on there the more guarded I am about my privacy settings; I don't have the illusion that anything is really private, but at least I can use the safeguards that are available to make it a bit more secure."There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please.
