HELP! (from the techie guys) - PC shuts off for no reason

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if any of you techie guys can help me out.

My laptop continually "goes off", normally when trying to scan with my anti virus or when using interactive CD-Roms or just after several hours continual use.

I had first thought a virus was the first thing to check, so I bought Norton, but when trying to do a full system scan it shuts off, I am still unable to do a full system scan.

I have tried reading various forums, and some suggested "hi jack this" and have someone comment on the results - it means shit to me so can someone have a look at my log below and comment:

many thanks for any suggestions:

Do you get any pop up windows appearing before the computer shuts down?

Edit: Useful website that automatically analyses Hijack This log files: www.hijackthis.de/index.php

Although I can't imagine it's as good as an expert, it's still a useful start. It suggests there are a couple of things that need to be fixed... O2 - BHO in particular.

It could be spyware on your system, but that's an aspect of computing I'm not particularly familiar with, so I'll let others comment on that.

It seems that your computer is shutting off for a number of different reasons, with the common theme as I see it, being intensive or extended usage. This would suggest to me that the problem may be overheating. Does the fan on your system still work?

I have a seperate additional fan system that my laptop sits on (as I thought it was over heating so a nice friend got me one) now when it shuts down there is hardly any heat at all.

I use Mozilla and pop up blockers so pop ups are not a problem. I have several spyware applications that I use so think that this may not be an issue.

You seem correct to say "extended use" - it seems that if the laptop "works" hard for a period of time (eg virus scans, drive scans, downloading big files) it shuts off more than should be acceptable.

it really is a pain in the arse! - especially as when i run my norton scan before it shuts down there are several threats that it does not have time to deal with...........

also, I have tried starting in Safe Mode, but after some DOS text stating paths to load it also shuts down........

So what is this O2 - BHO lark then?

Many thanks for your help!

M

I had a similar situation with a desktop. It started after XP Service Pack SP2.

I started thinking maybe bad memory and removed one of the memory chips. It then booted and ran fine. After a few days, I re-inserted the chip and haven't had a problem since.

Don't ask me to explain, just something that seemed to work out.

Todd

I am not totally useless, I can be used as a bad example.

My brother had the same problem on his laptop. I found some post in a forum somewhere suggesting that a bios update had fixed the problem for someone else. Problem was I couldn't keep the thing running long enough to get the bios update to complete.

Eventually I bought him some canned air. Sprayed it into the fan exhaust and intakes, sprayed a ton of dust out, and the problem was solved.

A friend had the same thing happening on his desktop. He could keep it running only by leaving the case open and aiming a big fan right at his processor. Somebody suggested he should upgrade his power supply. I didn't believe it would help, but I installed a bigger power supply for him and again, problem solved.

I know this in an old thread, but I'm having this exact problem. It does seem that when it gets even somewhat warm, it just turns off. This is happening all the time and it's really beginning to piss me off. I even have a fan that it sits on sometimes . But it's a laptop and I'd like to be able to use it elsewhere rather than just sitting on my desk.

How difficult is it to replace the fan??

FIRST, open everything you can - optical drive, access plates for memory, remove the battery, etc etc etc.

Then, get a can of compressed air and, using SHORT bursts, blow everything you can out.

Then, go online and look for a program called "motherboard monitor" (sorry, I can't access the site from over here to provide a link). Install it and see what it says what speed your fans are running at.

Also, check in your bios and see if the fans are being autocontrolled or not - you may be able to set the speed manually. There are also some shareware programs that can help you do that.

Finally, once all that's been tried... see whow much it will cost to replace the system fans.

Good luck!

Ok I'm online now looking for a mother board monitor to download. But how do I check in my bios?

In my experience, a PC just randomly shutting off like that is either an overheating issue or a power supply issue.

When mine heats up and quits, I use a vacum attachment over the little fan ducts on the bottom and other ports as well. I cover the end of the vacum attachment to reduce pressure. Been living in a recently completed home with lots of insulation residue and dust. Seems to work until it gets dirty again. Careful you don't suck up keys.
Do your part for global warming: ban beans and hold all popcorn farts.

When the machine is first booting up, you should either get some sort of splash screen (a pic, maybe saying something like "phoenix bios" or "AMI bios") or a text screen where it shows yourr memory being checked - in either case, try the escape key, the delete key, sometimes F12 is the key... it will bring you to your bios setup page. After that, you'll have to check the various subscreens to see if fan control is active and (if so) how it is set up.

I tried to download MBM5 but it didn't want to work right.

I was able to get the Core Temps and currently it says"
TJ Max 85 (degrees Celsius)
Core #0-42
Core #1-44

Not sure what any of that means. I'm getting ready to head to bed soon and then I'm going out of town for the weekend, would it be ok if I pm'ed either you or mnealtx on Sun??

MBM shows the temps, although Coretemp wouldn't be bad if a northbridge or southbridge was overheating - as I recall, MBM doesn't access those.

A better prog for her situation would probably be speedfan, as it allows some more options for fan control.

Regardless, if her temps are in the 40's, she *should* be ok.

Chiquita - use the comp like normal and track your temps. Let us know what they get to after some 'work time'.

I got speedfan also, although I'm not quite sure I understand how to work it. It's says press f1 for help, but that does does nothing.

Right now, after being on for about 1 hr and virus scan running core temps shows it running in the 70's.

Speed fan reports
Core 0:65
Core 1: 70
Both of these show a flame next to the temp.

What processor are you running? That seems to be quite high.

No idea. I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop

Edit to add: I was able to enter the BIOS by pushing f12.
Processor is an Intel Core (tm) 2 Duo

Didn't see anything about fan speed in the BIOS

That's quite hot for a Core 2.

Are you able to feel any air coming out of the cooling ports next to the processor?

I do feel some air coming out of a vent on the back-the air is warm.

Ok. Has it shut off recently? Next time it shuts off check the event log and see if there's any messages there.

You can get to the Logs by right-clicking My Computer > Manage, then looking under the Events section. Any OS errors should be listed under this section.

If it happens again, try to post the event log details on here.

Ok it just happened and I looked at the event log, but I don't really see anything or perhaps I don't exactly know what I need to look for, but it says nothing about the computer just shutting off. A few events about WLAN controller-sometimes it stops working.
No Critical, Error, or warning events in the past hour.

go get 1 20lb block of dry ice.
put it in a cardboard box and place the laptop on top of it.

Do something cpu intensive (like watch a dvd) that would normally make the laptop turn off. See if this helps, if it does, you have a heat problem.
