To be honest i didn't know what they used while tattooing. I was on my side with my back to the work station. I just assumed it was A+D because of the ginormous thing of it they have on the work station.

Why would his choice in his personal art make you think he isn't capable of providing a good service? Most of which he wouldn't have done himself anyways. I'd say he probably has a fair amount of practice and good teaching.
Whoever did the work on that guys face is good with shading and most likely was a mentor for this man.
