Gawain 0 #2 July 3, 2009 Ahhh...the good ol' days...Compuserve, Prodigy, TeleNET (SprintNET)....etc...and I'm a youngin' in the realm of the old services. I was a TeleNET user back in the day...So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! JohnRich 4 #4 July 3, 2009 It will live on in a new version. I used to hang out there in AVSIG (Aviation Special Interest Group) before there was ever a Dropzone.com. Paid for connect time by the minute, which got expensive. So there was an off-line reader you could get that would sign-on, download all new messages, then sign off, which usually took only a couple of minutes. Then you read the messages off-line on your own computer, and compose your replies off-line. Finally, you would use the off-line reader to sign back on again and upload all your replies - in and out in a minute. All of that kept your expenses down. jonstark 8 #5 July 3, 2009 I used to have to work on a Compuserve VPN or virtual private network for the youngsters. It was like a long secure toothpick sized tube inside the narrow bandwidth of Compuserve which I would equate to a drinking straw in diameter. If I had anything larger than half a meg to download I'd go to bed and hope that it would stay online long enough to get it done (rarely). bad memories there...
