Baksteen 84 #6 July 10, 2009 Thanks! My GF had the most original surprise birthday gift for me. I only knew that i had to be at the train station at 18.15 yesterday. After a short walk we ended up at a restaurant called CTaste, which is anything but an ordinary restaurant. Ever wondered what it's like to be blind? There you can experience it. Inside the restaurant it is pitch black, you have to eat and drink purely by using your other senses. When ordering you can only choose whether you want meat, fish, vegitarian or the Surprise menu, but they don't tell you what the exact dishes are. Each dish is accompanied by it's own beer or wine and at the end of the dinner you are invited to guess what you ate. Hence, you are much more focused on the taste of what you are eating instead of how it's presented on the plate. You are waited on by staff with very poor eyesight - it's amazing how our waiter was able to move in the completely dark dinging room. We were shown to our seats by putting both our hands on his shoulders and walk after him single file. Then he guided our hand to the chair and you were on your own. What surprises me the most is how quickly you get used to not being able to see; the starter course gave me a lot of trouble, but the main course (a good sized steak) and dessert were relatively easy to eat. So I had a lot of fun and I'm going to have a lot of trouble coming up with something as spectacular when it's my turn to surprise her....fortunately I still have until February.
