Nataly 38 #1 July 11, 2009 Hmmm.. For the fourth time now, my left big toe-nail is hanging by a thread.. I reckon it'll come off in about 2 weeks or less. It's so un-lady-like.. Any other runners out there this keeps happening to? I think I just exert more pressure on my left foot somehow. Boo. ntrprnr 0 #2 July 11, 2009 1) Better socks. 2) Get fitted for sneakers. You don't have to change your brand/style, but get fitted. By someone good, not the local Foot-Mart. I thought I was a half-size smaller than I actually was. (shut up guys, let it go, move on.) As soon as I changed, toenails started staying on._______________ "Why'd you track away at 7,000 feet?" jonstark 8 #3 July 11, 2009 Used to lose my big toenails just about every year when mountaineering hardcore. Ended up going to really lightweight hikers or sneaks which "cured' the problem. I'll bet your big toenail touches the front of your runner but it won't be a problem again for awhile will it?... jon
Nataly 38 #4 July 11, 2009 I don't think it's the socks, the shoes, or the length of my toenails.. On one occasion, it was after a marathon, so fair enough.. But the other times it was just repetitive running.. Maybe my left foot is just bigger than my right??? It's just plain annoying, but thanks for the tips guys "There is no problem so bad you can't make it worse." - Chris Hadfield « Sors le martinet et flagelle toi indigne contrôleuse de gestion. » - my boss

It's just plain annoying, but thanks for the tips guys My left foot is slightly longer than my right. I don't think it is all that uncommon. I'm a runner too, but have yet to lose a toe nail. Some of my running buddies have. Its almost always due to the shoe. Make sure you have plenty of room in the toe box of your shoe. I always get fitted for my running shoes at a running store. I normally wear a size 8.5 or 9, but am always a 9.5 in my running shoes.Adrenaline is my crack DPH #3 D.S. #16 FAG #12 Muff Brother #4406
Nataly 38 #6 July 11, 2009 The only reason I don't really think it's the shoe is because I've been running for over 10 years now.. Surely if it was the shoes it would have happened more consistently??? Naturally, there will be slight variance even in 2 different pairs of shoes of the same model and size.... And it's also possible that your foot size has changed just a bit in the past year or so...also not terribly uncommon.

The terrain you are running (more hills, less hills, etc.), the frequency, number of miles, or maybe your stride? The comment about shoe size changing is a good one too. Mine changes depending on my weight and/or milage.Adrenaline is my crack DPH #3 D.S. #16 FAG #12 Muff Brother #4406
warpedskydiver 0 #11 July 12, 2009 Sounds like you were haling ass downhill and you impacted your toes into the front of the shoes. Don't you remember anything from your military service? Oh yeah, that's right you were on a helo crewGoing downhill in ill fitted shoes/boots will tear your nails out and turn your toes into a hematoma. The way you lace your shoes up will affect that as well, if you have room to slip forward in your shoe due to gravity/force you will get that injury every time. I may not be able to run anymore, but I did run a great deal during my younger days, 3x a day at times. The course I ran rose 1400 feet and back down again. then back up and halfway down to finish. My feet were sore when I wore running shoes, nicely fitted combat boots did the best. Running shoes break down too fast. I was trying to get ready for selection. Nataly 38 #14 July 12, 2009 QuoteSounds like you were haling ass downhill and you impacted your toes into the front of the shoes. OMG, that might actually be it!! Thing is I don't always run the same route, so I kinda figure that the variation should make me used to all kinds of terrain.. And in over 10 years, I never found anything that linked each time I lost my toenail, apart from long runs (which to be fair I do 2-3 times per week anyway). But yeah.. Downhill.. It makes perfect sense.. Can't believe it could be something so *simple*!! turtlespeed 226 #15 July 13, 2009 Should we all get together and kiss it to make it better?
