Pack for a FASTER opening?

Recommended Posts

My new rig will include a used Fusion 210 canopy as the main, which takes 800-1000' to open, according to the previous owner. If I'm in a situation where I don't wanna snivel for a year, e.g. a boogie *cough*EloyHolidayBoogie!*cough*, is there a way I can pack it to SAFELY accelerate the opening? I don't wanna get bitchslapped, but I don't wanna be in the saddle at 2,000' if I dump at 3k or something.

On the other hand, I weigh 35lbs more than the previous owner, will that make it open faster unto itself?

Every single canopy is different & has different opening characteristics. I've packed my Specter at least 20 different ways. I use to have 1000 - 1200' openings. then I had off heading, then I had slow turning, then I had one or the other end cell closed, then slowly spinning... on & on. What I've finally figured out:
put the slider behind the nose (not between the cells but behind), quarter the other 3 sides normally.
Let the nose hang straight (I do make a little effort to make the center cell about a quarter inch ahead of the others).
Roll the tail loosely- I normally see the nose sticking out when S folding.
Take extra special care to leave the lines straight & in place.
My rubber bands are pretty lose, but the tighter ones are toward the locking stows.
The canopy is in the bag straight & even.

There is no can't. Only lack of knowledge or fear. Only you can fix your fear.

Before you go experimenting, just pack it "normally", i.e. whatever method you are comfortable with, and see what the results are first. Unless you are pulling at 2k all the time, a 800-1000 ft opening won't be a big deal. Besides, 3500 is the max deployment altitude during the Holiday Boogie at Eloy.

I'd try to be as current as possible, and comfortable with your canopy, before the boogie so that you can land out or x-wind without soiling yourself. ;)

Do you quarter the slider?

Please do not do this. There are samples enough from skydivers ending in hospital for not resetting a killed slider or even packing the slider incorrect!

Using your droque to gain stability is a bad habit,
Especially when you are jumping a sport rig

Try packing very, very neatly. You can watch a rigger pack a reserve, and see how the canopy is stowed. The neater it is, the less "stuff" that has to happen when it opens. Plus you get the added benefit of having a neat packjob.

Don't milk your lines (i.e. don't use your hands to smooth them so it looks like spaghetti at the very end because all of the unevenness is concentrated in the last 12").

After you wrap the tail around your canopy, don't roll it too aggressively -- just enough to keep it under control. Make sure your slider is sized appropriately -- if it's oversized, then the canopy will open slower. People have been known to cut holes in the slider, but I'd suggest talking to the manufacturer before anything like that.

I don't roll my nose or anything, and I generally fold the stablilizers back instead of forward. It helps to keep the lines centered (where you want them), and to give the nose plenty of room to catch air.

800-1000 feet is a long time. I don't see anything wrong with wanting an opening in less altitude than that. I pack for quick openings, too. These things work for me. I have not been having slammers (Diablo main)(knock on wood).

Whenever you're trying things in packing, keep a couple of rules of experimentation in mind.
1. Check with an experienced jumper or rigger. Not the guy who makes 500 jumps a year but uses a packer, but the guy who packs all of his own openings, and has for years. Think about the mechanics of what you're doing, and talk it over.
2. Never try more than 1 different thing at a time. That way if you get something you don't like, you know what caused it.

What? Quartering the slider is what i do on every packjob and is whats in the packing manuals. I am curious as to what you do with a slider.

hang on a sec. do you mean to say do not "COLLAPSE" the slider? if so, then it's a confusion of terminology. it sounds like you're telling him not to pull the drawstrings on the slider and 'collapse' it because people sometimes forget to return it to it's full position.

"QUARTERING" the slider involves bringing the slider grommets up to the slider stops on the canopy and bringing each side of the slider between its respective line groups.

for example: the left side of the slider would go between the left front and rear riser line groups. the leading edge of the slider would go between the left front and right front riser line groups. etc.

PLEASE make sure you use the correct terminology regarding the slider because someone can be seriously injured. the slider is meant to work by slowing down the opening and it works well when packed properly. you're jumping a stiletto, you SHOULD be quartering your slider. that's what PD recommends...trust me on this one.;)

i hope this is indeed the source of the confusion. please verify that it is.

thanks,
arlo
