New wrist mount alt. suggestions

Recommended Posts

Hey, I'm looking for a new wrist mount altimeter. The alti II that I have now I cant stand. I looked into getting the new Neptune but heard how poor it was. I really like how it has a built in log book in it and records top speed and openning alt. The only other alt I've heard of that does this in the Pro-Trac, and I dont think that you can use that as a wrist mount. Any suggestions on stuff out there?

I do recall your other thread, but I think if you do a broader search on the Neptune you'll find more "yea" than "nay"... I believe the Protrack can be used on a hand mount, though.

When you say alti II, you're talking about a bigass altimaster 2, right, not an altimaster 3/galaxy (alti-2 is also the company name)?

The neptune is great... I use mine as an audible but I know a lot of people that use them as visuals. They've all been happy with it, aside from a few issues like a cracked screen (which was replaced for free). They make a rubber cover for the neptune to help protect it when you've got it on your wrist... definitely use that if you buy one.

But anyway, you can't go wrong with an altimaster 3/galaxy/whatever they are now. Well, unless that's what you have already and don't like. BTW, another cool thing about the altimaster 3 is that you can get a custom face on it for free... http://www.alti-2.com/AnalogAltimeters/custom_dial_faces.htm. I gotta remember to get that done this winter when I'm not using mine (as much)!

sure it can... it won't tell you much about what altitude you're currently at... but you can stick it on your hand all the same. :P

(leg pulling - the protrack doesn't have a display that would be of any use during ff, it's used purely to set the device and access the data it records)

You simply can not go wrong with either the Alti-III or Neptune.

I'm not sure why you don't like either. I've jumped the Alti-III for years and it's stood up very well, and always done its job. I now jump a Neptune chest-mounted, and have yet to have any issues.

I know early releases of the Neptune had some minor glitches, but those were fixed with firmware upgrades.

Pro-tracks are really only useful as an audible altimeter. It doesn't have any freefall visuals.

I've used the neptune as a wrist mount for more jumps than I havent (which isnt *THAT* many, but)... I love it, it had it's glitches, but Alti-2 has been awsome about putting out software releases, and I have not had issues with it as an altimiter since the first time I updated it awhile back.. I've used it on two night jumps as well, cant beat it... I love the neptune, you probably would to.

The one I bought 3 weeks ago must have been an early release then :( 2 hours, one jump, one firmware upgrade, one dead Neptune.

Luckily they've promised it will be back to me for this weekend [:/] So that'd be ............ urm, not so good then.

I can be silenced by sending free swag :P

I'm new, so my opinion doesn't matter much... but I love my Neptune. I've been using it as a wrist alti and have a pro dytter in my helmet as a "you fucked up" backup alarm :P

The display is very easy to read in FF, and the logging feature is pretty cool to have. It is a little bit fragile, but the rubber armor mentioned by someone else pretty much takes care of that problem.

I'm with AndyMan - the Neptune is a brilliant product, and Alti-2's service is 2nd to none (especially that Lara chick, she's pretty cool).

And you know.... in the sport of skydiving, sometimes things fail to work 100%. It's not an easy environment for a little electronic product (or a big fat canopy for that matter).
I think I can speak for all the manufacturers in the skydiving industry when I say that we want nothing more than to see our custemers happy, jumping their butts off using our products.
If there ever is a problem - let us know and we will do our best to sort it out.

That said, I'm sure Alti-2 will do what they can to get your Neptune back quickly so you can get back in the air :)

Kolla,

I understand where you're coming from. I think the Neptune is awesome, or I wouldnt have bought one - I dont just go 'ooo shiny' and drop $250 :) wellllllllll sometimes, but not in this case.

I was really upset when a firmware upgrade killed it after having it out of the box for less than 2 hours - but my rep was cool, I was more upset that it's taken more than two weeks to get repaired.

That and I was hoping for free alti-2 tshirts :P

I'm really looking forward to having it back, my other alti is also an Alti-2 product.

As a person who's spent his life buying and working along side boutique musical instruments I understand that you guys all do your very best for us, and I appreciate it.

I just got back from the wffc and while I was there I spoke to an old friend of mine who now works with Alt II. She told me that yes in the beginning the neptune had a lot of bugs and that it needed work but now those problems have been taken care of and there is software out there you can download now to make it better. I guess that with this new info combined with all the " I love my neptune" posts I cant go wrong. Thanks for all the input.

Am I the only jumper out there who thinks any company should THOROUGHLY de-bug their product before releasing on the unsuspecting public with a lot of hype? Why are we being charged big bucks to test their item in the field?

Any idea how many airworthiness directives exist for the Cessna 182? It shouldn't be released until at LEAST 2025!

The neptune had some early problems, but the vast majority of people that bought even the early ones liked them. And the bugs were fixed for the most part through free software updates. Malfunctioning units were replaced for free too.

The people that have had problems with their neptune don't complain as much as the people that have never even seen one! :P
