Inappropriate comments at work...

Whoa!!! Maybe UK is more lose on the sexual harassment thing - in US, the guy would get fired for that!!!

:o Please tell me you're kidding.

Surely the best response in this case is just not to respond. If you don't see any suggestive remarks from him in the future, then either it was innocent or he's got the message.

If he's pursuing you then he won't leave it at that, in which case you can escalate it as need be.

O

I seriously doubt that but you are entitled to your opinion. :S

Here is an actual conversation that took place between me (I'm a director of a department at a non-profit) and our accountant (a married male in his early fifties) whom I worked with for years and we share the same screwed up sence of humor:

Me: Hey Joe I wouldn't eat that doughnut, It'll go right to your hips...
Joe: Bite me, Ms M.
Me: I can't Joe, I didn't get my rabies shot yet...

We wouldn't be able to do our job every day without humor and I understand that everybody and every case is uniqe. You have to listen to your gut and instinct. I certainly wouldn't have this conversation with a guy we just hired or with one that creeps me out.

*Excellent*!! I work for L'Oreal, and when we launched (yet another) waterproof mascara, I almost peed myself when I heard our divisional manager boast that now we could all enjoy water-sports without fear of runny mascara!!! It literally *hurt* not to laugh out loud!! But I didn't. :P

Hey my ex gf's swear by that stuff, no matter how many times it got shot in their eyes at a party, their mascara never ran.

Maybe it's the place I work at ... people get reported to HR for mildly suggestive comments all the time. As a manager, I go through "sexual harassment training" a couple of times a year and I am required to take every small thing seriously. Do I think they are over-reacting? Oh yes ... it isn't productive when everyone walks around constipated (for fear of being misinterpreted.)

Maybe you should have your company investy in a corn cob remover.

I don't know how it is everywhere, but where I work the definition of sexual harrassment involves UNWELCOME sexual advances. It's technically ok to hit on and joke around with your co-workers, but when they make it known that the advances are unwelcome or they are offended by the humor, that's when it becomes sexual harrassment.

So . . . if I came up behind you, patted you friendly on the ass (NOT groping or letting the palm linger) and said,"Good Girl." after you did a good job, that would be SH?

He responded with:
"I like girls who are happy with small things!"

Maybe you are the one with the dirty mind. He could have just been innocently flirting with you. How do you know that he didn't mean "I like girls who appreciate the little things I do for them" ?

+1 Thats how im reading it! I think the rest of you are a bunch of dirty minded crazy females!:P

I don';t see what the problem is - I mean - PRO ball players do it - Touch down - or a great tackle - little pat on the butt is accepted . . . Picth a flawless inning - Pat on the butt - I think they are over reacting - I mean their ass insn't worth as much as a pro football players ass is, is it?

What he said really wasn't anything- regardless of what he meant, it could be interpreted in many ways, most of them completley innocent. If you had responded any differently, it might have been YOU making the inappropriate comments. I think laughing it off and NOT commenting was the best thing to do.

The thing about SH in the workplace is that there is a really fine line between having a sense of humor and offending people. You really have to know the people you are working with to know how a comment like that will be taken. If even one person gets offended, it can be considered harrassment.

If you dont see the difference between a online skydiving forum, and a place where people work, get hired, fired, etc, then you probably havent been on the wrong end of an issue like that.

I give and take with the best of them. However, there are a few differences between Bonfire and harrassment at work.

We can ignore threads we're not interested in here. We can quit coming to Bonfire without its impacting our ability to earn money.

It really is better to err on the inoffensive side; better to be thought a little boring than creepy and offensive. Same goes for me. I've been known to use profanity, but not at work. There are too many people who might be offended at its use. It doesn't cost me anything.

There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)

I understand. I just think the avg. work place is to uptight! Take this thread and OP. I think this was blown way out of proportion for what the first 15 post, before anybody even seen the most likely meaning of what was said.
