Inappropriate comments at work...

If you dont see the difference between a online skydiving forum, and a place where people work, get hired, fired, etc, then you probably havent been on the wrong end of an issue like that.

True. But people do in fact work, get hired, and get fired at a real DZ. And I've certainly heard banter--often including the paid staff--of a sexual nature at the DZ that would be grossly inappropriate at most other workplaces--but is taken with a sense of humor at a DZ.

The question to me is why other places besides the DZ take themselves so seriously and can't seem to laugh about things.

Are you talking about the tandem instructors and their funny little homophobe jokes?

For instance -
So [BillyJoeBob] Are you still Gay?
BJB - No - But my Boyfriend just came out last week.

I think thats porbably due to the fact that at DZ's, the staff often socializes with each other (and no, I dont mean orgies lol). Its easier to know what jokes will not offend someone when you know that person well.

I most workplace, there is some socializing, but I think its fair to say not as much as at DZs.

The main issue with SH is that people make comments that they think is innofensive, but are perceived as offensive by others. Thats what happens when you make comments that are borderline with people who dont know enough.

I work with miners and with SW geeks. Knowing your audiance is pretty important. I can buddy-punch, shoulder slap, hug, make really awful sexist jokes with some of them, because I know them (we've solcialized plenty, and no I dont mean orgies lol). I wouldnt do the same jokes with another colleague in the room or within earshot if I dont know well, or if I know them to be more easily offended.

Maybe it's the place I work at ... people get reported to HR for mildly suggestive comments all the time. As a manager, I go through "sexual harassment training" a couple of times a year and I am required to take every small thing seriously. Do I think they are over-reacting? Oh yes ... it isn't productive when everyone walks around constipated (for fear of being misinterpreted.)

So . . . if I came up behind you, patted you friendly on the ass (NOT groping or letting the palm linger) and said,"Good Girl." after you did a good job, that would be SH?

I think what Olympia's describing at work, as she says, is "constipated" in the extreme - although I admit that, nowadays, I always err on the side of never saying anything remotely suggestive around a woman at work (just like I never, ever discuss race or religion at work), because you never know who will take something the wrong way. And all too often, "accused" equals "presumed guilty", so better safe than sorry.

However, a man's uninvited slapping of a woman's ass, as you describe, at the workplace, not only is out of line by today's standards, it would have been out of line 30 years ago when I entered the workforce. Yes, it would presumptively be sexual harassment. That should be so well-known by now that any adult doing it should be written-up just for stupidity alone.

I agree that some PC is BS. But some things are just plain inappropriate, and brushing them off as "PC" doesn't make them any less so.

I don't disagree but I can walk away from this site if something upsets or offends me, or if I feel like a post has crossed the line into nasty sick creepy territory. (It happens sometimes.......)

If that happened at work and it happened a LOT, my options would be kind of limited. I need my job and can't just get up and walk away.

Where will this end. I don't know what to say, it makes me kind of angry that you are upset by this. :|

Huh??? Where will what end?! No need to be angry, as I'm not upset in the slightest! Just thought it came right out of the blue, given the "sterile" environment in which I currently work.

Then again, as many people pointed out, I'm glad I answered what I did because maybe it was *me* turning something innocent into a dirty remark!!:ph34r::ph34r:

Relax, man!! I was just surprised! You know.. In the same way it comes as a bit of a shock when you walk down the street looking like a complete mess and someone whistles at you.. You just stop and think.. "huh??" You turn around to see who they were looking at and realise you're the only person standing there (looking like a bag-lady)!! :D:D

Sounds good, will it be a 2-way or another 3-way with Little Skychic? :P
Give one city to the thugs so they can all live together. I vote for Chicago where they have strict gun laws.
