First motorcycle - thoughts??

Recommended Posts

get a yamaha DT 125ccm, rides almost like a bicycle and is a fun ride.. you can get them for VERY cheap, and services and stuff dont cost an arm and a leg.. get comfortable with that, then decide.. :)

I guess that's just a little tough for us over here to get to grips with ... we have so few Automatic cars that proper gear boxes are the norm... we just get on with it.

More than that - shifting gears is part of the pleasure of driving. Seriously!

A question for all the experienced bikers on here..

So about 18 months ago, I did my CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) and got my Learner's Permit for riding a motorcycle up to 125cc.

This CBT learner's permit is only valid for 2 years, so next step is either:
-Do nothing, retake the CBT every 2 years - max bike = 125cc.
-Get my full licence on a 125cc bike - after 2 years I can automatically ride any size bike. This doesn't expire.
-Get my full licence on a 500cc bike - I can ride any size bike now. This doesn't expire.

Here's the problem.. When I did my CBT, I first had trouble with my balance, so they gave me an automatic scooter to practice on. Then when I tried a geared bike, I kept stalling, so in the end I just used the scooter for the road test. :S

What I would like to do is get something so I can travel on highways, so that means a geared bike. I'm not keen to get something BIG - I'm sure I would be more than happy with a 125cc Honda CBF or something like that. So I was thinking probably the best option is to take more lessons, do the full test on a 125cc, and in 2 years I can decide whether I want to upgrade.

What do people think?

In a few years i am sure you will want a bigger bike (even 500cc is a very different ride) If you get used to riding a smaller bike it will be harder to learn on a bigger bike as you cannot "muscle" your way around like you can on a 125CC. thios is the problenm taht my GF had when she upgraded.

Its best to do the full test. If you need to there are schools that you can go to to practice, that or find another rider and ride around a parking lot with the bike.
Downsizing is not the way to prove your manhood.

God I wish I could help but the UK rules and laws are so different from what we have here in the US!

I can say is pelase wear all of the gear all of the time.
Even if it's a quick run to and from the local Kebab shop. Not only will it keep you safe but it's also very sexy.

If you are looking for inexpeinsive gear you may wish to check out;

Very nice people very nice prices and with the exchage rate on your side you may make off well.

As for lids, you really want one that fits very snug.
As for boots, they should cover yoru ankles and most of your shin to prevent damage due to falling or crap comming up and hitting you.

Good luck and happy riding!

Shipping seems quite expensive, but worth having a look anyway - thanks! :)
As for protective gear, I agree with you 100%.. I'm always shocked and horrified when I see girls riding scooters in skirts and high heels (no kidding). It's fucking retarded.. They may only be going 40mph, but they could still get hit by a car going 100mph in the opposite direction.. B|

Stupid.. Just stupid.

I like seeing them in skirts and high heels when they get off the bike though ;)

Don't you prefer to see them peel off their leathers and reveal a skimpy skirt?:ph34r::ph34r:

Smart girl!
If you want nice boots that look less Ricky Racer and maybe a bit more Prada look into Icon. They make great boots for girls that not only look good but also protect your feet.

As for the jacket and pants if you are only going 40mph you can ride around in a pair of light leather pants and jacket.

I ride around in mesh / padded pants and mesh padded jacket in the summer months and leather jacket + textile pants in the spring and fall.
The pants have a zipper on the side to getting in and out is very easy.

As for a lid, I personal love caberg. I've face planted at 60mph on one and walked away. And that was on a flip up version.

As for your riding abilities...it's a lot like sex. Once you got it you got it....and when you don't do it for a while it takes time to get it back. So take it easy, go on long rides and you will get it!

And if you are lucky you will "get it" (i've known girls who have gotten off on the vibrations of their bikes.)
