Fleabitus 0 #1 July 24, 2005 Can anyone give me some input on the new Icarus Omni. Im looking for a good first canopy for my wife. At 5o years old she is looking for something that is simple, well behaved, and opens softly. I am a videographer and jump a spectre and omega. This omni is new to me. If anyone has any info good or bad on this "Omni" please let me know. Big thanks in advance!
dragon2 2 #2 July 24, 2005 Don't think it's new, actually I think they stopped making them. From what I've HEARD (from someone working at Icarus though), it's a more hp than a Spectre/Triathlon/Omega and they wouldn't recommend it for someone with 25 jumps, as our Dutch canopy charts allow. According to that guy an Omega would be a better choice. The size of the canopy fits though, as opposed to the Omega's and Safire1's which are about 8% smaller then the label says compared to other Icarus chutes. ciel bleu, Saskia

lummy 4 #4 July 25, 2005 It was my understanding that it was the Omega which isn't made any longer and it's replacement was the Omni. AS to the rest of it, an Omni being more HP than the Omega I couldn't say having not flown one but I seem to recall the Omni was marketed as a good "lightly elliptical" canopy geared towards lower # non swoopy crowdsI promise not to TP Davis under canopy.. johnny1488 1 #5 July 27, 2005 The Omega is still being produced. The Omni is "higher performance" than the omega, but still just a 7 cell lightly elliptical canopy. The Omega is geared more towards newer jumpers. Johnny --"This ain't no book club, we're all gonna die!" Mike Rome
lummy 4 #6 July 29, 2005 I stand corrected. It looks like I'll have to look at another Omega when I'm ready for a new canopy :) I do remember reading when it first came out that the Omni WAS the new Omega. It looks like they were different enough to keep both around? Missed this the first time around, QuoteThe size of the canopy fits though, as opposed to the Omega's and Safire1's which are about 8% smaller then the label says compared to other Icarus chutes. does anyone know if this still holds true for the newer Omegas?I promise not to TP Davis under canopy.. Plummet 0 #8 July 30, 2005 QuoteIt was my understanding that it was the Omega which isn't made any longer and it's replacement was the Omni. AS to the rest of it, an Omni being more HP than the Omega I couldn't say having not flown one but I seem to recall the Omni was marketed as a good "lightly elliptical" canopy geared towards lower # non swoopy crowds I put about 35 jumps on an Omega 185 before I got my Omni 183.5 (Don't forget the point 5). The Omega was one of Icarus' canopies that measured smaller than it is labeled. Hence, it was close to a 170 or so. At the time, I was told that the Omni was an upgraded Omega and that the Omega was going to be discontinued. This was October of 2002. I now have about 750 jumps on the Omni. Even though the Omega was smaller, the Omni is the "sportier" of the two. They advertise it as "semi and lightly elliptical". This may account for the fact that there are only 4 D-lines on the Omni. Jumping one canopy right after the other, I got the impression that they were two entirely different canopies rather than an upgrade. I am very happy with the 183.5. I'm not loading it heavy, maybe 1.1 something and I'm a very conservative canopy pilot. But, there have been no times when it disappointed me. My only complaint would be that the opening sequence is slow. It deploys fine and on heading, but then the slider hangs up. You can tell it is going to open, but the slider stays at the top for a good 3-5 seconds. I have no problem using it on a low altitude hop-n-pop but if you aren't used to it, the hesitation can be unnerving. The flare is awesome. A wide range of acceptable flare points. Very forgiving. I would definitely buy this canopy again. -Jeff. http://www.iplummet.com Common sense and common courtesy are NOT common.
