Here min the Denver area a woman and her daughter have been ruinning a scam for the past ten years. I was in court yesterday for an unrelated issue and I watched this drama unfold.

This woman and her duaghter set it up so that one of them would get involved with a guy. the one involved would claim that the other was abusive and needed a place to go. The guy/dupe would let the one move in with him. a few months later the mothwer and daughter would reconcile. and the one not involved in the relationship would "lose" thier home apt etc and ask to move in with the couple. the guy/dupe would end up supporting both women in hiss home niether of which had jobs just kicking it at his expense. The one invilved wouold get the guy to do a refinance or secound mortgage credit accounts whatever to secure "Spending money. When the well dried up the one not involved would cry rape, assault, or some othe violent crime.

I know it sounds absurd but whatching this in court was stunning. The defendant brought up ten cases over the last decade that involved these two women. in many cases the homes of the unfortunate guy were given over to the women who proceeded to loose them to forclosure a few months later. Usually after they had found another mark. One man lost his home car and a barber shop he had owned for more than twenty years.

As to how the women got caught, thier last mark happened to be the son of a D.A. and his father did research into prior court cases under the two womens names! He did a great job in presenting the two conwomens act. Most of the cases were settled out of court which made the research even harder. I am still amazed they got away with it for so long.

Final conclusion of the court ....Probation for the daughter and six months county time for the mother! A thousand dollars in reparations to the last young man. thats it! The daughter even tried to claim comon law marriage and ownership of the guys house!

Given the extent and consequences to the victims, probation, without even a month or two jail time, is pretty light, even for someone with no prior convictions. $1,000 restitution is light too; the judge could have ordered a lot more restitution; and if they couldn't pay it all, they'd stay in court-supervised debt forever. Nothing wrong with that.

As for the mom, I understand the outrage, and I feel it too; but from my experience in a lot of different jurisdictions, assuming the mom has no prior convictions, I think most judges would probably have sentenced her to something in the 6 to 12 month range.

For fucks sake - that's all they got?

That's pretty common, in terms of sentencing and/or fines. $10 says that the women won't complete the probation or pay their restitution. That means that they'll have a motion to revoke warrant AND a Capias Pro Fine out fairly soon.

Most of the time its the jury that goes "oh, well, he seems like a good guy who made a mistake" when its really a hard-core gang banger. The DA or ADA or CA or ACA will tell the jury about him being a hard-core gang banger, and they'll ignore it. All in all it can be pretty frustrating, BUT its always a roll of the dice with a jury.

How much time would the blokes get if they went and beatthe shit out of those' women'?

Neither extra-judicial justice nor corporal punishment are deemed tolerable in modern society, either in your country or mine. And in your country or mine, they'd get the appropriate sentence for whatever severity of assault they committed. Anger, especially that which is not heat-of-the-moment (or involving marital infidelity), is usually not considered much of a mitigating factor by most judges. Man-on-woman violence, on the other hand, is usually considered an aggravating factor by most judges.
