mtbriles 0 #2 August 18, 2009 i do believe i was told 24hrs before any kind of serious activity last time i gave blood. But i said fuck that and played in my lax game anyway. felt light headed but oh well. im pretty sure youll be fine. but what the hell do i know Why not? My direction in life is up...then down again REALLY REALLY FAST!!! Never take life too seriously. Nobody gets out alive anyway. D.S. #
lolimfalling 0 #3 August 18, 2009 if my first jump course they said they recommend waiting 24 hours before jumping after giving blood. however the instructor went on to say he jumped as little as 4 hours after giving blood and never experienced any problems. billvon 3,078 #4 August 18, 2009 >Anyone have any knowledge regarding this? It will increase the odds that you will get hypoxic, since your red blood cell count will be depressed for a few weeks. If you're going to full altitude I'd recommend against it. If you're worried about it ask your doctor.
MrDree 0 #5 August 18, 2009 There is a recommandation in the SIM about that. You should wait some time (no idea how much) before jumping after you donate blood."One day, your life will flash before your eyes. Make sure it's worth watching." pcramil 0 #7 August 18, 2009 i think you'll be fine with hop 'n pops, but going up to 14k' or maybe even 9k' might not be a good idea..
Nightingale 0 #8 August 18, 2009 Have you donated before? The few times I have, I felt awful for about a week. Tired, no energy. Not sure if it had to do with being a dancer/martial artist and everything I was putting my body through at the time with training (no, I wasn't anemic), but there's no way I would've gotten on a plane to go skydiving the day after. Most of my friends felt just fine, though.

Anyone know what the FAA says for pilots? That might be a good guideline.

GLIDEANGLE 1 #11 August 18, 2009 Interesting info about FAA policy for pilots. Unfortuanely, I cannot find the primary source. http://www.leftseat.com/blood.htm Any of the following will impair your tolerance of full altitude jumps following blood donation: -- Smoking (disables some of your remaining hemoglobin) -- Pulmonary disease that impairs oxygenation of blood. (emphysema, COPD) -- Known poor tolerance of full altitude (those jumpers who know that they don't like to linger at >13k.) I know some very experienced jumpers who HATE delays at full altitude due to their poor tolerance of the low oygen tension at that altitude. If you are worried... make it a weekend of low altitude H&Ps and work on canopy flight/landing. Rarely is that time and money which is wasted! The choices we make have consequences, for us & for others!
k-dubjumps 0 #12 August 18, 2009 I've opted to give blood on Monday at a local hospital instead. Although, I have to saw it was a hard decision knowing how much better my jello shots would be. downwardspiral 0 #13 August 18, 2009 Having gone through Altitude Chamber training with the Navy I was able to recognize on several occasions when the entire load was hypoxic. AS a civilian you just need a FAA Medical certificate and $50.00 to receive similar training. Well worth it imo. Nataly 38 #16 August 18, 2009 I've donated twice right at ZHills and went on to do a jump pretty much straight away (ie: the next load ). I didn't have a problem, but it's a bit like jumping all day.. By jump 15, there is no particular *reason* not to go for a 16th jump, but you're tired and if you're honest with yourself you know it's probably a good idea to rest. Have you given blood before? I would think that if you donate on Thursday you should be fine by the weekend. Obviously everyone's different. So yeah.. If you feel fine, you can jump. But it would probably be wiser not to if you have any doubt on the day. k-dubjumps 0 #17 August 18, 2009 I've given before, usually about for times a year, and always feel fine. I've just never given within a few days of jumping and was wondering if I should be concerned about it or not. I'll just wait until Monday and do it at the hospital. I'd like to donate, but I'm not sure if I should knowing that I will be jumping on Saturday and Sunday. Anyone have any knowledge regarding this? U.S. Air Force, Army and NASA rules state: Following blood donation (200 cc or more), aircrew members will be restricted from flying duty for a period of 72 hours. Following plasma donation, aircrew members will be restricted from flying duty for a period of 24 hours. Balls in your court now. But those are mil/DoD regulations. No real rules (merely guidance) by the FAA on blood donations and flying.

Concur, with emphasis on Tuesday. I tend to have another drink or two of a Sunday and Tuesdays are less busy anyways. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
