Had a chance to do the Wrong thing, and........

Recommended Posts

....... I DIDN'T.....

was at the local "italian specialty store"...
shop there from time to time...

anyway. paid my bill, collected up the plastic grocery bags, headed to my work van.....

As is sometimes the case, i went into one of the bags , looking for something to munch on.......

Saw two 10 dollar Pork Loin Rolls,, and a wrapped submarine sandwich....:o:S:S
HUH????
i didn't buy those items... :S
Also saw a white business size envelope with a clear window in it... and outta the window.... Alexander Hamilton was staring at me...:o:|:)
Hmmmm the envelope was sealed, and was fairly thick... with CASH...!!!

i must have grabbed up a plastic bag, which was left on the counter, ,,,,
along with MY items.....

hmmmmm Damn... !!!NOW what do i do???
Damn.... [:/] it took only a few seconds.... and I KNEW what i HAD to do....:|

so I went back inside, and up to the cashier...
said,,,"Geeze.. i think i grabbed someone elses' bag"...... she shrugged,,, as if to say..."i don't know"... and then looked at the envelope...
"Oh this is one of the girls' pay envelopes".... and just then a young girl who was busy chatting with the other workers, came back from way over where they make the subs....
" Oh my God " she goes,,,,,, " I must have 'just left that' on the counter"......:S[:/]:|
I kinda looked at her over the top of my eyeglasses, and said, "you gotta be more careful"...
" not too many people , who wouldda brought this back in here, for you", as the bag was handed to her. She grinned sheepishly,,,, and grabbed it ...:|
hardly a "thank you" from her...

oh well..... so it goes.

I'm gettin' far to old to start compromising my standards at THIS point...even though it WAS tempting...
Not so much for the $$$$ but they make a Helluva Good submarine sandwich there....:P;):)just shook my head and left....[:/]
I hope God was watching...;)

She should have made you a free one for bringing it back! No doubt you would have felt like crap if you'd kept it ... good on ya for bringing it back.

I knew before reading the whole story that you would do the right thing.
You'll get yours back in spades someday. Keep on being one of the good guys.
You give the rest of us hope.
Be patient with the faults of others; they have to be patient with yours.

If he wasn't we were.... you are the best Jimmy T In time it will sink in and that young lady will realize how fortunate she was that a man of integrity found that money. And maybe the next time you stop for a sandwich- whe'll be working the counter

It doesn't take that many posts confirming what you should already know (that you're a good, decent guy) to more than make up for the money.

Now the sandwich -- that's a different story. B|

Will your wife mind if I tell you I love you? You're a swell guy! :)

:$:$
Aw Shucks , Skymama...
your words, alone,,,,,, have made the decision MORE than worth it.....
:):P:$:$
...
fact is...[:/] I KNEW right away,,,,what Nancy would have said to me,,,,"You take that right BACK,, this instant"!!!
hahahahaha
.. and she wouldda been correct........;)

NOW...in retrospect, IF i had Kept it,,, but THEN gave it AWAY.... to needy friends,,,, ( they KNOW who they ARE )...
Would THAT have been OK???? seriously !!!!!
quite the dilemma...

nah nah nah ....
(for a poor and stupid man,, i'm feelin' pretty good....) and even If i gave it all away , the poor girl who possibly worked for 2 weeks!!! for that money,,, would have still been left without it....
and THAT would NOT have been fair...>:(

Kudos for making the right choice. I've had similar things happen. One woman pointed out to me that lots of people would not have done what I did. I told her I had plenty to answer for. Don't need more.

Pat yourself on the back and keep going, friend.
I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet..

But do you think it would be appropriate to just remove all of the warning labels and let nature take its course.

if you didn't want the cash.. you shouldn't of been so selfish about it and instead thought about people like me who would of taken it off your hands for little to no hassle. i get the cash, you don't carry the guilt of having something that isn't yours.. win / win for everyone.

That's kind of sad, but I guess it's true. Jimmy, good on you for doing the right thing - but I think in these circumstances any other action would be pretty scummy... [:/]

Dude

Dayam this is making me hungry....we don't have a Italian specialty store in this town, i use to live in Stamford Conn. LOTS of people from the old country there and many stores with those hanging salami's and cheeses....like Satriali's on the Sopranos.......now that I think of it.....you sure that wasn't one of THOSE envalopes? you know...."Here's your taste boss"...:P

I kid
I am sure she was embarrassed by her co workers but is thrilled you brought it back.....now thats paying it forward!!:)

exactly MikeJD.....

i erred, in grabbing all the bags on the counter, without checking more carefully, in the first place,,, and scummy is exactly how i woullda felt , had i done the wrong thing...
I was thinking at first , that it all belonged to a customer,,, and lots of
" little old Italian ladies " shop there.... so it would have been like taking from my own Mama...or Grandma...
could never do THAT...;)...
I was happy to see that the actual owner was still there....and that it got back into her hands....
Tuna.... i know that you're just joking... but IF i gave the $$$$ away.... i might have felt better, and YOU might have felt better.. but that young lady, wouldda been S.O.L.... and so,,, she wouldda been harmed....[:/]

It IS a store with all the salamis and cheeses hanging from the ceiling !!.. with a canoli and pastry counter, and fresh dough, for "do-it-yourself pizzas", 15 different kinds of sausages , an Olive Bar, a 50 foot long cheese counter, and 'Old Country' Music playing,,,, which you notice the moment you walk in the place... " Che- la- Luna, Metso mano, mamma mia..." etc etc...
It's called Rubinos... and is run by the Old Mans' children now, who have kids of their own, who stock the shelves...:|
Mister Rubino, Himself,,, is there 10 hours a day, and holds court, at one of the tables near the sub counter.. !!! hahahah....
My dear Full Blooded Italian Grandparents,, all 4 of whom are now in Heaven,, would have loved this place,,,,and I bet my Grandpas, were taking a break from a glass of wine and a game of bocce' and were keeping an eye on me,,, to be sure i DID do the right thing...

Red & White & Green Flags, on the wall,,, macaroni machines, for sale, on the shelves,,,
bread from 5 different bakeries, and 20 brands of Olive Oil, on the shelf
A place i really enjoy visiting, and i never whould have been able to hold my head up,, in there, again,,,, had i listened to the devil...
signed,
little vincenzo....B|

thanks nerdgirl......

i have 3 brothers , one sister, and 18 first cousins,,,,,, and EVERY one of them,,,, would have done the same......... every ONE...:|
Fact is... I bet that the majority of those here, with whom we share , wisdom, hopes, accomplishments, failures, dreams, sillyness, humor and deep thoughts,,, on a daily basis,,,,
would ALSO have done the right thing.....:)
Not to say that those within the "general public" would do the same,,, [:/] ( there are waaaay too many out there who have learned to rationalize BAD behavior) >:(
but those of us who have 'slipped the surly bonds' ,, tend to know what is right and what is wrong,,, and more importantly,,, WHy...

sad, terrible , to hear that someone who is near to one of Us, lost her purse and rent money to some freakin' " opportunist"..:(:(
damn Thief....>:(
I WILL send , a check for 50 bucks to offset a small amount of that loss...
DkS13827, PM me your name and mailing address and i'll DO it,,, and mail it tomorrow.... no joke...

Hmmmm.... I wonder if they're related to the Rubino's I know in NJ?

BTW Vinny, I too love places like that. Back in '01-'02 we were doing a job in Jersey City so every week or 2 we'd hit Fiorie's in Hoboken (5 minutes from the job site) on Friday & head back towards Trenton with 6 or 7 bags of goodies. B|
