So uh.. yeah.. about that..

Recommended Posts

After almost a year of living off saved funds and being a slacker... I submitted an application to the Florida Highway Patrol today.

I have a background in the fire service as a paid firefighter for 8 years and medical training so I'm hoping it will look good on my application.

This was done at the suggestion of some close friends who know me very well and all agree I would be good at the job...

My biggest fear is that I will actually get hired and have to face down some escaped convict with nothing to lose on the side of a deserted highway in the middle of the night..

I can hold my own, but everybody knows there is always someone bigger and badder..

So uh.. that's all I got.. the post whores now have the floor.

Bill, you're probably thinking of St. Petersburg.

St. Pete - old folks
Tampa - shooting gallery

:D:D
My reality and yours are quite different.
I think we're all Bozos on this bus.

Have you done a ride along? Its a quite a bit different then an episode of Cops.

Good luck and even if you're identified as LEO here, I'd shit-can talking about which agency you work for (or are trying to get hired by). Same with anywhere on the internet. People will go out of their way to complain on you for something that has no baring on their life, just because they were mad. They will try to find stuff on the internet to hurt you with. Someone on DZ.com might get mad at something you said here about something random and they'll try to complain on you. Impossible you say? Ask Kevin, ask me...actually there have been quite a few.

You can't be scared of that kind of fight. Firstly, you train for it. Secondly, you have a 30lbs belt full of crap to deal with it. Thirdly, its attitude. That you will win, you will go home that night and you will be OK. No matter what, you never give up.

Once you're in a good fight at work, then you won't worry about it anymore. You will also learn how to talk about 85% of people into doing what you need them to do. Verbal Judo. You'll learn how to do that while maintaining a safety margin and keeping the tactical upper hand.

After chasing a doped up suspect with a stolen gun in a car for a while, (after he was pointing it and threatening the victims with it) then running full blast after him into the woods after he bales out of the car. Then getting into a fight that would make the MMA proud, you'll think about it after the adrenaline dump. Its after the fact that you'll think about the danger. Up to that point you're going off of your training and your tactical mind set.

So focus on getting hired, then focus on your training and seek outside training as well.

I have an advantage that even thought I have been taught PPCT and get retaught PPCT every year, I have been in martial arts for most of my life. I still seek outside training and tactics to learn. Taking what will work and discarding won't.

Do you have any "friends" that are currently or have previously been on-the-job ?

They are usually one of the best places to start for "real" info ...

Your concerns are very real ... the simple "traffic stop" is one of the most stressful and dangerous parts of the job (so I have been told). You are usually alone and don't have any real idea of what you will face once you get to that window and dark tinted glass (factory / aftermarket) on the rear windows does not make it any easier

Try and keep it in perspective ... you are an active skydiver. You are trained to anticipate any number of situations / emergencies ... you will never really know how you will do in those situations until you face them but we all know that each time out the door may very well be our last. Every jump has a significant "possibility" of severe injury and death ... we all know that and accept the risk ...

Where we are most vulnerable is driving down the highway (I4 / 295) at rush hour ... we know that there is a risk ... when an emergency happens there were not really anticipating it and get caught off guard.

Every time you gear up ... you do your basic safety checks ... make sure your aad is on ... and even have a "buddy" do a pin check before you exit the plane.

Put the risk in perspective ... you have learned to depend on your ability and training as a skydiver ... now just do the same thing when your are on-the-job ;)
99% of the people on this earth are sheep ... dare to be different

As mentioned earlier my exp in the fire department, I have fought much fire but never really thought about it, so I'm assuming this will be the same way. Aggie guy also mentioned the training will take over.. I recognize that by the time I realize I'm in a bad situation I'm already in it and it's too late. I have no "Friends" in law enforcement.. just people who know how I feel about working for the fire dept.. I have a real passion for helping others (even if I come off as an asshole), and I like having a job that I can go home at the end of the day knowing I MIGHT have made a positive impact on someones life. Have considered being a cop for a long time, just never took the step until now.
