jclalor 12 #1 August 30, 2009 I have a nephew who is a bit of a bullshitter who was just discharged from active duty 3 months early from a 5 year enistment. I was wondering : Would the navy now pay $2ooo a nonth for him to attend a junior college? Would he get a $20,000 bonus for joining the reserves working in intelligence? ( He was an electician) Would the navy allow him to use the $20,000 bonus to pay off his past due debts in order to pass a background investigation? Thanks for any help with these questions. GQ_jumper 4 #2 August 30, 2009 The $2000 a month is from the GI bill, which everyone who has been in the service is entitled to unless they left under unfavorable conditions. I couldn't find any info on actual .mil websitesabout the Navy's prior service bonuses, but what I did find on unofficial websites showed that you can get money for joining the reserves at the end of your active commitment. And once he gets his hands on the bonus the Navy as no say as to what its used for. If he wants to clean up his credit report which is a big part of any background check than nobody can tell him to do otherwise. lost_n_confuzd 0 #3 August 30, 2009 Assuming he earned a favorable discharge and not a BCD or DH, he can use the Chapter 33 G.I. Bill, that pays the school directly plus he gets a housing allowance, $1800 a month for D.C. It's better than the old system in that the student banks some serious $$$. About the 20k, there's too many variables involved for anyone here to answer that. You would have to see a Navy Reserve Recruiter. The bonus is yours, you can spend it on whatever you want. Pay off debt, hookers & booz, Vegas, car, etc...

My last re-enlistment I recieved 30K and 8 days after I signed the paperwork the bonus was increased to 40K!!! Imagine the worthless crap I could have bought with an extra 10K!!! I have 3 years left til I'm up for it again and I'm hoping the bonuses don't take a dive between now and then because the next one is my indef re-up.History does not long entrust the care of freedom to the weak or the timid. --Dwight D. As a taxpayer I resent the implications that my hard earned money would go to hookers & booze in Las Vegas, unless, of course, you invite me! Fortunately, I'm adhering to a pretty strict, uh, drug, uh, regimen to keep my mind, you know, uh, limber. --- The Dude ---
nanook 1 #7 August 31, 2009 QuoteWould the navy now pay $2ooo a nonth for him to attend a junior college? Yes. The new GI Bill will pay BAH at e-5 rates. Plus, they will pay full tuition at the max of the highest tuition of the University of that state. QuoteWould he get a $20,000 bonus for joining the reserves working in intelligence? ( He was an electician) Yes, but it doesn't have to be intelligence. Most electronic rates and such apply. But an intel rate from a EM is may be a challenge. QuoteWould the navy allow him to use the $20,000 bonus to pay off his past due debts in order to pass a background investigation? Nope, you don't get into intel till you pass your clearance. Then he would get the 20,000 to use for whatever he wants to._____________________________ "The trouble with quotes on the internet is that you can never know if they are genuine" - Abraham Lincoln
